Unstable Man Attacks Six in the Loop
A man police called mentally unstable randomly attacked six people in the Loop yesterday, including a 75-year-old woman and ABC 7 anchor Cheryl Burton. No one was seriously hurt, and police have the suspect in custody.
The attacker punched a woman in the face and head and threw her to the ground near Washington and Dearborn. He assault five more people as he ran away, until police caught him on Randolph. He hasn't been charged yet. [Trib, ABC 7, S-T]

31 dead last weekend. Weird ass killing spree this week. Now this? Yeesh!

Crime generally experiences an uptick when the weather starts getting warmer.
These violent attacks are totally normal for this time of year.
It will quiet down again in November.

I'm not so sure it was 31 dead. But with the way numbers get thrown around, it's no wonder we're all confused. Here's some stats-gathering from Tuesday's SCC:
* Sun Times: 37 shot, 7 fatalities;
* Tribune: more than 20 wounded, 6 fatalities;
* Channel 2: 36 shot, 2 stabbed, 9 fatalities;
* Channel 5: 38 shot, 8 fatalities and 13 of the wounded were CPS honor roll students;
* Channel 7: 37 shot, 8 fatalities;
* Channel 32: 38 shot, 2 stabbed, 8 fatalities and a quadruple shooting (1 dead) at a southside McDonald's continuing the streak of violence plaguing the city since Friday.
I love the whole "when it gets warmer there's more crime" thing.
It makes me think of all these criminals sitting home, being sad cause they can't go out and kick some ass. Then, that first spring day, whooo hooo! Free for all! They're so happy it's warm now.
Stupid crime.

What's the frequency, Cheryl?
take a look at the crime states for the late 80's through mid 90's for chicago, this city used to be war zone. The economy is in recession and according to population trends we have a record number of people in there high crime years 16-24 from baby boomers having babys. If you get shoot or robbed please remember to feel sorry for your attacker its not thier fault according to some.

April is the cruelest month?
I lean towards the scientific notion that the rush of warm weather has people outdoors more, leading to more opportunities for conflict. There could also be an argument about hormones, sexual aggression urges leading to violent outbursts.
I've noticed an uptick in general surliness among commuters. This morning I watched a cyclist and a driver all but coming to blows as they tried to edge each other out on Ashland near Irving Park.
Take some deep breaths folks.

Let's just hope this attacker gets the conseling he needs.
In fact, the next time I am attacked, as the bike chain crashes into my cranium, with my last gasps of life, I will pull out the card of a highly recommended therapist with a pre-paid credit card to make sure the 35 year old in front of me can get more in touch with his inner child after he is through beating my brains out.
