We would have guessed that was simply taken from a plane, but this is actually a shot from space. These nighttime photos are meant to be "dramatic illustrations for the continuing story of humanity’s footprints on the Earth." Mission accomplished.

The caption on the linked site says the photo was taken on 10-7-2003. If you squint you can see the Cubs losing to the Marlins in Game 1 of the NLCS.
Those awful orange streetlights perfectly show the boundaries of Chicago.
You can even see Rosehill & Graceland Cemeteries.
