Being a self-proclaimed greasy burger connoisseur, but only being new to Chicago, I'd have to say my favorite so far is Moody's in Edgewater. But how can you deny the atmosphere of The Billy Goat Tavern even if their burgers are "so-so" at best? I certainly think the Chicago burger culture is decent and I would expect to find more and more hidden gems. I don't think "terrible" is a fair statement, personally. Thanks for the tip Chuck, I'm looking forward to giving Kuma's a try. Call me simple, but the Led Zeppelin sounds mighty tasty!

Ateention National, televised, and/or internet food critics: Kuma's is horrible! Never go there, and never recommend it on your show or in your publication. Their burgers are not even worth trying, so please steer clear of Kuma's. I'm really sick of having to wait to eat there. (Exceptions will be made for Decibel magazine.)

One of our fellow Chicagoistas found it on Boing boing. I understood the context immediately. I'm not exactly the biggest LOLcats fan, but thought it appropriate. @spav: Kuma's puts most of their burgers on pretzel buns. and they are the best burger joint in the city.

Only anecdotal, but I've yet to find a great pub burger in Manhattan or other cities on the East Coast, both north and south--nothing near as good as what Chicago has. I have friends who grew up in Chicago and have moved to the East Coast and say the same thing.

Best hamburger in town is at Flub a Dub Chubs on Broadway. It is served on a toasty pretzel bun and owned by a retired Doctor and his wife who are adorable. Also: they have a Wii they will let you play and if you go on Thursday, they will let you watch "Don't Forget the Lyrics"
