CTA Starts Free Rides For Military

2008_5_1.cta.jpg

Today's the first day for free CTA rides for active military personnel, who must be in full uniform to qualify. Onerous! A military ID card, a la the senior card, is in the works to expand the program to disabled veterans at some point this summer. Also, the CTA is cutting 100 non-union administrative jobs. [S-T, CTA]

The last time I saw military guys on Public transit was on a Metra, they were four 19 year old navy kids, and they were throwing up and then they got thrown off the train.

Well, I guess this makes up for the current crappy state of GI Bill benefits. Or some of the crappy vet care. Or crappy military pay for many, if not most, enlisted folks. Or not having jobs when they return from service and our various wars.

Spav1, you've probably seen military personnel on the CTA in the past week and didn't realize it.

They aren't always in uniform, you know.

i see the occasional sailor on the red line during chicago fleet week, which is never...when does the underpaid administrative professional fare program start?

Obvs I meant in uniform. God.

Veterans DO get a bad deal from the government, sort of like Russia didn't get a Marshall Plan after the Cold War.

I am strongly against Proposition 395.

You're against discounted bus fare for war widows?

Ah, you bet I am.

----

I was supposed to talk about Proposition 395.

MOOCHIN WAR WIDOWS!

What's going on with the sign in the background of that pic?

Oh hooray! Another group of people who don't need free rides is getting free rides.

Who shall we give them to next? Hey, here's an idea: How about "people who work downtown and need to use the CTA in order to get to their jobs so that they can support their families"?

Or maybe Shriners.
