Try to make it over to the Landmark if you have some free time today; today is your last chance to catch the Hennegan brothers’ new documentary about the Kentucky Derby. The First Saturday in May follows five horses on the path to the 2006 Kentucky Derby, the year _______ won.* Much like Spellbound did in 2002, the documentary serves to show the training and utter devotion that goes into preparing for the culminating moment of the film.
Called “essential” by Time Out’s Joshua Rothkopf, the documentary should be a perfect prelude to this Saturday’s 134th annual Kentucky Derby.
As far as what the weekend scene is for Derby parties and bar specials, just toss “Kentucky Derby” into Metromix and away you go. Race at 5 p.m.
* See that Harriet Beecher Stowe action?
2828 N. Clark Street, playing today at 1:50 and 7:10

I'm afraid I'll cry through this entire movie for Barbaro. After all, I am the girl who as a child had a Barbie horse she named Man o' War.
I'd go bet on a horsey for the Derby. I won money years ago by putting $$ on Funny Side (some spelling of that, anyway). It was fun! Except for the massive amounts of smoke in the OTB.
The movie sounds good, too!
ummmm, i was crying just watching derby races on youtube this morning.
@amy: Have you read Seabiscuit? Cause you may need to if you haven't yet.
Good Lord.
I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark here and say you both cried in Charlotte's Web.
;)
