Cedric Benson has never lived up to his lofty draft status and giant paycheck, so you'd think that the Bears running back would try extra hard not to give the team another reason to look to replace him.
And yet that's just what Benson allegedly did this weekend, when he was charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest after an incident on his 37-foot yacht near Austin, Texas. Benson's boat was boarded during a random check and he supposedly failed a field sobriety test administered by officers. After Benson initially refused to come to land for further testing and refused to wear a life vest, he was sprayed with pepper spray. He claims he was cooperative, yet they maced him anyway and roughed him up further once on land.
"They gave me a field sobriety test, told me to say my ABCs and told me to count from 1 to 4 up and down," said the Bears running back. Um... we're not sure that Benson is smart enough to perform those tests completely sober so maybe he really wasn't under the influence of anything.
It'll be interesting to see how the Bears deal with this situation, especially given the recent incidents involving the likes of Lance Briggs and Tank Johnson. Will they buy Benson's claims that he did nothing wrong? Will the team await further details before addressing the situation? Or will they use this as an excuse to dismiss Benson from the team?

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

Boating while intoxicated is like an American Pastime.
I am calling shenanigans on this stunt. He was obviously having some sort of "hip hop" party on this yacht, with lots o' Hos and the cops saw it and were like, "Dagummit!". The fact they MACED him says a lot.
If this were like, a nouveau riche person on some yacht, or like, Matthew Mcoughnahey, they wouldn't have done shit.
That being said, this guy is obviously basically functionally retarded. Sign him up for literacy classes with R. Kelly.
nick nolte would be proud.
Umm, I'm no huge fan of Mr. Benson's play so far, and I was a little weirded out when he cried about how the Bears had treated him prior to the draft, but I don't think we should convict the guy just yet.
According to CB's account, his mama was there- not really conducive to "hip-hop ho" parties. And I think anyone would look like Nick Nolte in their mugshot if they'd just been pepper sprayed. I can see these Texan river cops being a little out of line. Cedric's story of being maced for no reason may not seem to hold water, but we weren't there, so who knows?
It's not like he crashed his Lambo on the Edens and ran, or anything.
The important questions:
When resisting arrest, did Cedric run farther than the 3.5 yards he has been averaging per carry?
Did he lower his shoulder, or try to take the cops to the outside?
These are important questions to real Bears fans!
Austin police have arrested Matthew Mcoughnahey for acting like an idiot. I guess they mean it when they say dont mess with Texas.
Irishman you know damn well some old fat texas cop arm tackled him for a loss the guy has no heart and is about to be even farther down the bench.
To be fair, though, that old fat texas cop was probably one of his offensive linemen at UT.
"Um... we're not sure that Benson is smart enough to perform those tests completely sober so maybe he really wasn't under the influence of anything."
How is this appropriate? I can see blasting his play for the Bears, which hasn't been great, but it's pretty low to say that he's too dumb to know his ABCs.
"Um... we're not sure that Benson is smart enough to perform those tests completely sober so maybe he really wasn't under the influence of anything."
Benjy, Benjy, Benjy. Have you picked up a newspaper in the past 20 years?!?
Your comment is racist in form.
Tell me Benjy, WHY do you think Benson is not smart enough to perform the ABC's?
Please advise.
Phew,
I was about to say to throw him under the jail and then I realized this was about one of our professional athletes.
