I always thought Chicago was the most segregated place in the Midwest, at least for cities.

Sadly, Milwaukee still holds the title "Most Segregated City"

one thing i've heard people say about chicago vs. southern cities (from people who've grown up in the south) is that people in the south put their racism/prejudice right out in the open. everyone knows where everyone stands. whereas in the north people are just as prejudiced, but we hide it and that makes it far more insidious.

i've never known what to make of that or if it's really true.

Petey: Second that.

FRP: Interesting. I always thought Chicago was the most segregated place in the Midwest, at least for cities.

chicagoans are very extroverted, agreeable if you happen to have attended the same big 10 school or like the same baseball team.

@thatsright -- I'll agree with you that our fair city has a rather sectarian feel to it especially when it comes to ethnicity. However, as for Chicago being the worst, I beg to differ. There are probably a few more cities, if not more than a few, that are far worse. Take Indianapolis for example -- sleepy (read: boring) Midwestern city that fancies itself a "bible belt" city (more like a fat roll coing up out of the bible belt). One of the worst I've ever lived in -- divided along racial lines; even the grand wizard of the KKK used to live there; active KKK groups in the immediate suburbs. Now I ask you, which city is worse?

Chicago is a beautiful city...but there's too much segregation and underline racism among the cultural groups (especially upper and middle class whites). I was born and raised here and was shocked to find my city has among the worst negative racial attitudes. You would stereotypically think downsouth areas like Dallas, Texas and etc. would have more of these issues. But no, from my experiences and what others who I know experienced, Chicago is the worst.

I find midwesterners to be the clique-iest of any area that I've lived in.
From lower school, middle and high school well into adulthood.

This isn't a judgement, just an observation.

"The Midwest, long a center for the manufacturing industry, has a prevalence of conscientious types who work well in a structured, rule-driven environment."

I find some truth in the above quote. As much as Illinoisans complain about government voters don't exactly display an independent streak. If accurate this description also does not bode well for fostering creative or entrepreneurial classes.

Boy, I look at the concentrations of "neurotic" in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rust Belt/Appalachia, and I think I have a whole new appreciation of why Hillary Clinton was so popular there, and Barack Obama wasn't.

It's so true. Everyone in this city is totally, like , your new best friend all the time. Everyone talks, everyone is sociable...

SF and NYC are the exact opposite.
