Terrible Lakeview Intersection Proves Deadly

2008_05_pedestrian.jpgThe intersection of Belmont and Sheridan is one we've hated and feared ever since moving into the neighborhood. It's a toxic stew: you've got cars anxious to get on LSD, cars anxiously getting off LSD, commuters anxious to catch buses going downtown or anxious to get home after getting off buses coming from downtown, and a traffic light with timings that almost seem capricious. Yikes!

This morning a 62-year old neighborhood resident was killed in the crosswalk after getting caught in the middle of a chain-reaction crash. It happened about 10:15 a.m. when a westbound U-Haul truck ran a red light and broadsided a southbound car in the intersection. The two occupants of the truck got out after the crash and took off on foot. They're still at large.

so tragic. that intersection is indeed treacherous. i avoid at all costs, opting to use addison/diversey for bus/lake access.

i hope they catch the bastards that ran the light.

It is truly an awful intersection, traffic is always so hideous on Belmont, everyone gets road rage and does whatever they feel like doing.

I feel like they should be able to catch the assholes who fled the scene- can't they tell by who rented the U-Haul? I suppose they could've lied when they rented it, but how likely is that? I guess if that is why they fled...anyway, it seems like they have SOMEWHERE to start.

i hope they catch the bastards that ran the light.

I would think it's only a short matter of time before these two assholes are apprehended. Just follow the paper trail from the rental truck...

The news article said they were looking at the rental information. . . I doubt its a fake name, as you are required to present your license upon UHAUL rental. I hope they catch the guys too, and that the reason they fled was that they were freaked out, rather than intoxicated or committing some other crime.

Though, fleeing a scene where someone is injured or killed without attempting to get that person help is not excusable!

If the truck was stolen or rented out under the table without proper documentation, it would make tracking the suspects more difficult.

Very sad.

Doesn't that intersection have a red light camera? Shouldn't that have prevented this accident?

come on rob, terrible? grow up.

I live on the 12th floor of a building at the corner of Belmont and Sheridan. I heard the crash clearly on the 12th floor. IT WAS TERRIBLE.
Didn't the city talk at one time about making Belmont a one way street? Something has to be done - is there any chance of getting traffic cops from 7:30 to 9:30 am. They are there for Cubs games but the congestion is EVERY morning! Another point - (and I don't want to come off as defending motorists) pedestrians need to follow the walk lights! I know the wait may seem very long but hopefully if we all start following the signals we may find a slight decrease in accidents. Another point - - do we really need to have delivery trucks and garbage trucks during those hours - - they double park and then traffic builds up and again the response is road-rage! Who do we go to with our concerns as residents of this neighborhood?

rob, sounds like we should take our concerns to tom tunney.

like you said, pedestrians are all too eager to jaywalk to save a few seconds and this needs to stop. but i don't think vehicle restrictions are in need. the accident happened at 10:15, which i assume is past the major rush period, and could have been caused by a car just as easily.

making belmont one-way would make it way too hard to catch a cab to and from boystown bars :)

On Monday morning I watched a car smash the heck out of the car in front of him, while we were all stopping/stopped at a red line on Lawrence and Cicero.

The guy that smashed the back of the other car drove around everyone and cut off the oncoming traffic to take off down Cicero.

What kind of assholes leave the scene? Even more the reason why driving in the city is a big hassle. But then there's biking and trying to avoid being hit by assholes in car's leaving the scene of a crash.
