Daley Plaza Farmers Market Open!

By Anthony Todd in Food on May 15, 2008 3:27PM

We woke up at 5AM to catch the opening of the first day of the Daley Plaza Farmer’s Market. It’s perfect for anyone who works downtown or who takes the CTA. Every Thursday morning for the rest of the summer you can see the plaza filled with flowers, plants and fresh food.

What did we find? Well, it’s a little early in the season for most vegetables, but there are still plenty of great things. River Valley Kitchen had a good selection of their wonderful mushrooms, as well as some popcorns and preserves. We found an array of asparagus ten yards long at another stand, selling for only $2 a bunch. Nichols Farm had an incredible selection of herbs and plants, as well as many varieties of potatoes up from the cellar. There were jams, pickles, cheeses, salsas, breads, pastries… more than enough to keep you busy for a week of cooking.

We bought: a large container of mushrooms, two bunches of asparagus, two pounds of honey, a jar of cherry jam, a bunch of rhubarb. Total cost: $19. A great morning of shopping.
