We woke up at 5AM to catch the opening of the first day of the Daley Plaza Farmer’s Market. It’s perfect for anyone who works downtown or who takes the CTA. Every Thursday morning for the rest of the summer you can see the plaza filled with flowers, plants and fresh food.
What did we find? Well, it’s a little early in the season for most vegetables, but there are still plenty of great things. River Valley Kitchen had a good selection of their wonderful mushrooms, as well as some popcorns and preserves. We found an array of asparagus ten yards long at another stand, selling for only $2 a bunch. Nichols Farm had an incredible selection of herbs and plants, as well as many varieties of potatoes up from the cellar. There were jams, pickles, cheeses, salsas, breads, pastries… more than enough to keep you busy for a week of cooking.
We bought: a large container of mushrooms, two bunches of asparagus, two pounds of honey, a jar of cherry jam, a bunch of rhubarb. Total cost: $19. A great morning of shopping.
Take a look at some photos!

Extra, Extra

Nice, not to much out today, but still nice. I hope they have the women who sales the numerous varieties of hot sauce and spices this year. I also like the farmer who sales cactuses. No it aint “cacti”!
is it open over the weekend?
"is it open over the weekend?"
Unless every Wednesday is the new every Saturday, no it's not open on the weekend.
But there is a plethora of weekend neighborhood farmers markets around the citay.
@matty -- I don't think the farmer's markets in the Loop are open over the weekend. More info here.
Awesome pictures! Totally makes me want to go check it out.
@Spook:
I love cacti.

Why have you not fixed the original post?
INCORRECT MARKET DAY MAKE CURMUDGEON ANGRY!
I can't wait for all of the city's markets to open.
Curmudgeon - Sorry, that's my fault. I even WENT this morning. I guess that's what i get for waking up so early and trying to write. It's fixed now.
