Green By the Lake

05-17-08_GreenFest.jpgThe Green Festival, the nation’s largest green living event, continues again tomorrow at Navy Pier. Healthy and green, you won’t find any elephant ears to snack on, or have to rub elbows with fat folks in this crowd. Instead, you’ll find organic snacks made with fair trade practices and vegan lasagna. There are all sorts of fashion accessories hand-crafted from hemp, or elephant dung paper, and stuff for your home like thermal shades or rooftop garden containers. It’s like a county fair, only there is no barn yard smell.

The festival, which started today, explores the latest in clean technology, green building, social responsible investing, eco-fashion, renewable energy, green careers and green collar jobs, natural foods, eco-tourism and more. They have workshops, speakers, and panels. So if you’re wondering just how green your household green initiatives really are, this is the place to check it out.

The Green Festival continues on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Navy Pier. Admission is $10 at the door with discounts for seniors, bike riders with Green Festival Bike Valet ticket, bus riders with transfer/bus pass.

It was great to see people from Preservation Chicago and the Save Grant Park group at the Green Festival.

They were getting petition signatures against the Children's Museum land grab.

What part of "park" doesn't Mayor Mumbles understand?

lord knows that us fat folk don't care about the environment.

thanks for letting us know there won't be elephant ears. i was thinking of going to green fest on sunday, but i guess i will have to find somewhere else to go - somewhere i know i can get some form of fried dough. after all eating fatty foods is all we fat people can think about.

thanks so much for saving me the trip

I was there today - so, a few words of wisdom:

1) If you haven't been to Navy Pier in a while, be aware that if you take the CTA there, the festival itself is on the dark side of the moon of Navy Pier. Seriously, it's all the way at the end, I saw old ladies and new moms collapsing along the way.

2) The signage is really confusing. Just walk to the end of the pier. You'll find it.

3) The empanadas from the Chicago Diner booth were cold, doughy, and gummy. Not worth $8.

4) Get a bag FIRST, or you will drop all your swag.

All in all, while the location is a bit more central than last year, I felt like the event itself wasn't as good - the CTA didn't seem prepared for the influx of people going to/from Navy Pier, the Pier itself was already crammed with Saturday tourists, the signage was lacking and confusing, and it didn't seem quite as big or full of vendors.

So Tim, how'd they keep out all those horrible fat folks? Was there a scale that everyone had to step on? Mandatory BMI tests?
