15 Charged After Building-Permit Bribery Investigation

Fifteen people, including seven city employees, are being charged with crimes connected to corruption and bribery within the Chicago's Building and Zoning Departments. U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the city's inspector general David Hoffman, FBI officials and postal inspectors are holding a press conference later this afternoon to explain all the charges. Damn. Whawhawhaaaaat?

Comforting...

Last week an electrician working on our house was wiring a new air conditioner and didn't run a ground conductor. When I protested that such an installation was not up to code the electrician stated "it passed inspection" so what was I so worried about?

So my suspicions about the quality of the inspection seem justified based on this story. I'm glad I insisted and had the electrician install the ground conductor. He was a big dick about it though.

This is somewhat reassuring to see that [some] people are being held accountable.

As a homeowner whose property mysteriously passed inspection when the building was built (putting the developer in the clear)... only to get slapped with violations later on when a neighbor complained the building wasn't up to code (leaving the condo association on the hook for the repairs) - I hope this sends a message. This is a victory, albeit small, for those honest folks who take care to build the right & responsible way.

This article reminds me of that movie C.H.U.D.

How could something like this happen in chicago? I bet the mayor will be shocked to hear about this shocked that there could be corruption here in chicago.

In can see where those who were caught are coming from. They saw convict Bob Sorich celebrated with a fundraiser thrown by Daley's Bridgeport heavy hitters and believed illegal behavior was acceptable. They are peons who just want their slice of the pie.

That being said I hope Fitzgerald crushes them and works up the ladder... way up.
