Garrett Popcorn Closing Michigan Ave. Store

Garrett Popcorn is closing its Michigan Ave store on May 31, making room for the Ritz Carlton and for people to actually walk on the sidewalk. Don't panic, you can still get your "Downtown Mix" at several other locations throughout the city, and plans to open another Garrett on Michigan are in the works. History snippet: Garrett Popcorn Shops has been a Chicago institution since 1949 and after Oprah listed it as one of her coveted favorite things in 2002 and 2005, internet sales increased like whoa, where "whoa" = 35 percent.

We don't really see what the excitement is. Garrett Popcorn is a nice idea in theory, but has anyone eaten more than two kernels without their veins disintegrating into the two primary ingredients of the popcorn, butter and sugar? Mglurg. [S-T, photo by ulterior epicure]

It's OK, but good luck getting any enjoyment whatsoever from it if you don't finish your bag and want to eat some the next day. It doesn't work as leftovers.

They were shut down by the health department a couple days ago. That can't be good.

The thought of Garrett's always makes me a bit queasy. So greasy, so sugary, but to each their own.

I've waited in line in this town for a lot of food items. Garrett's was probably the one item I wouldn't go back for.
