Remember when Oprah swore off burgers and the beef industry went apeshit? Well now she's going whole-hog vegan for 21 days.
Oprah and three of her non-Gayle pals at Harpo are giving up all animal products, caffeine, sugar, gluten and alcohol for three weeks. Which would maybe be tough on your own in terms of menu-planning, but Oprah has personal chefs, so maybe a bigger challenge for them? Anyway, the O et al are following Kathy Freston's Quantum Wellness, in which Freston encourages people to try a "Jump-Start Cleanse [to] eliminate sources of toxins and allergens, giving the digestive system a break from working overtime to process the substances that inhibit optimum performance the most."
It's all part of Freston's "conscious eating" program, which will be sweeping the nation in 5....4....3... [People, Oprah]

yay!!!
ok, and that blond women has the skinniest stick legs i have ever seen.
i think veganism still has a long way to go before it 'sweeps the nation.' this is america, after all; we'd fill up the gas tanks of our conversion pick-up trucks with red meat if we could.
it's REALLY hard to cut sugar out of your diet entirely. i've been trying to do it for a couple months now & i'm hard pressed to find much food that doesn't have some sugar snuck in there somewhere under another name or form... dextrose, maltose, pure cane sugar, & especially the worst: high fructose corn syrup
i give anyone a lot of credit if they can go truly vegan even if only for 3 weeks.
I'm have a "person chef" too I guess, me. Everyone who's ever cooked is a "person chef" too!!
Forget "Person Chefs", If I had Oprah's money I'd have a cool robot chefs.
"cleanse" and "toxins" - two of the biggest diet weasel-words in the English language. If that (plus the involvement of the Big O) didn't get your BS-meter blaring, you're doing it wrong.
observing that picture closely, it’s clear that Oprah is contemplating taking a huge bite out of her neck and then shoulder, just because she can.
p.s. on a related note, I broke down and watched Diary of the Dead on You tube yesterday, any body as disappointed as I was?
It's the gluten that is the toughest for most people, because gluten (wheat, oats, rye and barley) is in many foods and there are hidden glutens (in sauces, meat substitutes, etc.) For most people doing this diet it would be really tough and time consuming, but since she has people cooking for her the burden shifts to her food preparers.
This is one of the reasons that I can't stomach Oprah:
at the end of her little vegan experiment she is going to gleefully declare "If I can do it, anyone can!!!"
Right.
Anyone who has the money she has to spend on organic foods, a personal chef, a personal shopper, personal assistant, personal trainer and a direct line to Dr. Oz.
I just got back from Whole Foods. I spent almost $100 on food just for dinner tonight and tomorrow ($20 of that was on vitamins).
I bought no meat...don't eat much meat. Tonight we're having Tofu Burgers, Broccoli, Sweet Potato Soup and for dessert Strawberries and Blackberries.
This stuff is EXPENSIVE and I'm feeding just myself and my son.
There is no way I could do this if there were more people in my family. I'm not poor, but I'm not rich either.
Oprah is so out of touch with reality, she has totally forgotten what it's like out here. I'd like to see her do this after she moved out of her mansion and into an apartment, getting a job that pays around $50,000 a year and making do with that-without her entourage of chefs, assistants, shoppers, trainers, etc. THEN I'll believe her if she says "If I can do it, anyone can!!!"
