Smashing Pumpkins Turn 20, Tease With a Tour

Smashing Pumpkins turn 20

Oh Billy Corgan, are we on this list? Today the Smashing Pumpkins announced:

To celebrate the band's 20th anniversary, The Smashing Pumpkins will be playing select U.S. cities in August and September of 2008.

No dates or cities have been announced but expect the band to revisit a few specific places that were missed during the last U.S. tour...

We're guessing Chicago -- perhaps specifically Metro? -- is one of the places the band is speaking of. But the announcement really begs a bigger question, if James Iha and D'Arcy aren't involved, is anyone really expected to care? Zeitgeist didn't exactly reinvigorate the band's name.

On the bright side, at least Corgan had the decency to just make the announcement on his website, instead of taking out another full page ad in The Chicago Tribune.

you just have to wonder what could have been.

I heard Billy Corgan went into a restaurant and ate everything in the restaurant and they had to close the restaurant.

Come on, that's not true. Billy Corgan doesn't eat.

YAWN

Excellent use of the "questionable relevancy" tag, though even that might be a bit of an overstatement.

I haven't liked an album he's put out since Adore, but I've seen Billy (with SP and otherwise) live 10+ times (yes, I am a loser) and he's never disappointed. I'll probably end up going. The man is insane, so it is sure to be entertaining. Plus I like the acoustic version of Rocket SP2 plays.

Everything will be fine as long as Jimmy Chamberlin shows up. Jimmy's the only one that Corgan knew he couldn't replace.

They ARE coming to Chicago, as well as proper New York and LA shows. This has already been confirmed by Billy to several fans and Billboard.

Oh, and people need to get over James and D'arcy. They added little to nothing musically, but people seem to romanticize them like they were Beatles members. Shame on Chicagoist for being another media outlet that can't mention Smashing Pumpkins without bringing up James and D'arcy.

Pizza Club, I'm old enough to remember blowing off the Gish CD release show at Metro to go to Medusa's, and back in those days D'Arcy and James were integral. It's like The Who still calling themselves The Who with only 2 guys still being alive. Sure, they're allowed to get away with it, but they'll never be as good as they were at full thrust.

And the last good SP album was by this band called Zwan ... because then Corgan at least had a proper foil.

I loved SP, and my history with the band goes waaaaaay back, but I've grown overly tired of Corgan's egomania. I'd prefer he and Chamberlain -- who is stil an AMAZING drummer -- just started a new project and stopped trading in on a brand name when the original product is beyond any hope of resuscitation.

what ever tank boy sayith, I agreeith cause he knowith all about this stuffith
