We've heard about "going green," but Chicago 2016 is taking recycling to a whole new level. Spokesman Patrick Sandusky stated that the group has been in discussion with London officials about possibly reusing parts of London's stadium, being built for the 2012 Summer Olympics, in the proposed Washington Park stadium. Sandusky claims, "What's important to note is they have a similar concept in terms of re-purposing the stadium, so we're talking to them about how to best use a stadium and how to leave the best legacy." Both stadiums would hold around 80,000 seats for each city's respective games, but the London stadium will be renovated to a 25,000 permanent seat structure, while the Chicago stadium would only hold 5,000 post-Olympic permanent seats under current plans.
Even if recycling London's stadium isn't feasible, Sandusky said the talks are worth it."The bigger discussion point is, 'You proposed a similar type stadium [as Chicago's]. How do you best plan for delivering a stadium like this?'" he said. "They've given us a lot of advice in that regard."
Chicago is expected to make the IOC's shortlist of candidate cities for the 2016 games (most likely along with Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo) in June. The games will officially be awarded in October 2009.

Weekend Diversion: Night Of The Ponies

Retarded. What about shipment costs/carbon imprints or whatever?
I'd think the shipment would be about the same as ordering/creating/shipping all new materials.
How much carbon does PLACING AN ORDER use?
Jesus. You are hysterical.
What are you talking about?
What is possibly wrong with the concept of reusing part of another temporary stadium to keep manufacturing costs down. If environmental concerns are your top priority then reusing old materials would cut down on "carbon imprints" as well. Think about it, if Chicago builds all new then they manufacturing a part already in existence. The only way that the CI could be lower at that point is if a newer part was far far less expensive to ship. But since these new parts are likely to be manufactured someplace not named Chicago then the shipping would be comparable to getting them from London.
sounds like PR spin to make Chicago's "green Image" stand out among the other tough competitors...sounds great in theory, though. the Olympic flame is recycled ike crazy and nobody make a fuss about that.
Um...placing an order=ordering parts;ordering parts=CREATING parts; hence the chain I implied before. Spav seriously, you're an idiot.
"sounds like PR spin to make Chicago's "green Image" stand out among the other tough competitors...sounds great in theory, though. the Olympic flame is recycled ike crazy and nobody make a fuss about that."
Bingo. All PR.
Actually, it sounds more like London's costs are far higher than the even imagined & this is just a PR stunt to deflect criticism about the ever increasing cost of the Games.
Watch, nothing of substance will be shipped from London to Chicago, that's assuming that Chicago gets the 2016 Games.
Reminds me of the Ferris Wheel. Created in 1893 Chicago, moved up to Lincoln Park, then to St. Louis.
I'm good with this, so long as we don't recycle London's seizure-inducing logo.
