I think one of three things will happen in the next 5 years: 1. Airlines will fold, as the service they provide becomes impossible to pay for; 2. Airlines will siginificantly raise rates to reflect the cost associated with providing their service, effectively eliminating much of their customer base; or 3. Government will decide the airline industry is essential, and will either subsidize the airlines or take them over completely. (It will be interesting to see if this works as well and is as well-received for air as it was for trains.)
