DAWG, the Animal Abuse Hunters
If you’re like us and you tear up at episodes of Animal Precinct, there’s a way to channel your disgust for animal abuse into a volunteer opportunity. The Dog Advisory Work Group, otherwise known as DAWG, is looking to bump up its Court Advocacy division, which is made up of conscientious citizens trained to monitor proceedings in animal abuse court cases.
This push comes at a critical time considering that Cook County has seen a recent increase in animal crimes. DAWG is particularly focused on increasing presence in the south side of the city and suburbs, which has seen the biggest spike.
DAWG Court Advocates are trained to build relationships with prosecutors, be a presence in the courtroom on behalf of victims and serve as a symbol of accountability to all parties involved.
More information on how to volunteer is available here, although not much is said about time commitment. Regardless, we figure if you’re going to spend a day in court, this is more exhilarating than jury duty. [S-T]
