Street Artist Murdered

Renowned local street artist Brendan "Solve" Scanlon was murdered in Logan Square Friday night. Police have a suspect in custody, but charges haven't been filed yet.

These pics are of a small fraction of Solve's work, which could be seen all over the city. Here's a video of Scanlon talking about his work, which came up on this very site a few months ago.

Murdered? Fuck's sake man. Chicago is getting worse and worse crime wise.

This is tragic. The reports seem to indicate that victim and offender knew each other.

Of course they knew eachother. Which indicates that while tragic, maybe the deceased didn't have the most upstanding friends. It is not an indictment of the city Chicago in general, alright Matty?

Matty stated a fact. Crime, especially murder is on the rise again.

I got to know Brendan over the last couple of years and am saddened by this tragedy.

We hear of murders almost daily now, 26 public school students, west side, south side, north side... but having someone I know murdered really brings the reality home.

Basically, unless you are in a gang or involved in some kind of escalating personal dispute, or trapped in an abusive relationship, you are more likely to be attacked by a shark than murdered by a stranger or affected at all by some perceived rise in crime.

This Solve was a leader and one of the founders in Chicago Street Art. It just baffles me that out of all the people, some on like Solve who was doing something so unique, inspirational and good for the pubic spirit in Chicago ends up getting got. And I bet this Kirk Tobolski mean while gave nothing, but only took. I hope Tool-Tobolski getting to play hipster tuff guy was worth it for him

Spav- While I'm sure we all appreciate your reciting of generic statistics, please don't speculate on things you obviously know nothing about.

Brendan wasn't involved in gangs, or drugs, or just general bad S*it. He was a street artist and a 25 year old. That puts him in a space to meet, "know" and run into a lot of people.

Sometimes trouble-makers come to your party or your street or your gallery and there are only a few people to stand up to them. Please think about all Brendan's friends and admirers before you start filling in the blanks for yourself.

We miss you Solve, much respect and love.

mad respect for Brendan. wish i could've met him. this is a terrible loss to the city. but more importantly, his family and friends. my thoughts go out to them...RIP

This is the dumbest thing I've read in quite some time. I would love to see the scientific journal you got this information from.

"street artist"???
i'm pretty sure GRAFFITI is not legal.
since when do we give names like "street artist" to hoodlums?

Since when do we call street artists hoodlums, getover? Have you seen his work, or are you just making assumptions about it so you can swoop in under cover of relative anonymity and challenge Spav1 for the title of Chicagoist Prick of the Day?

I'd always run into Solve at random art openings, nighbrohood dive bars, parties, and just on the street as he would be engaged in his generous civic goodness that made so many people stop and smile, stop and think or a combination of both. I always thought he would be around for a while so I never tried to get too deep with his crew and scene, so I hope Chicagoist will keep us posted if there is a public memorial

It's graffiti, not "street art." Get real.

Spav is right you all.

And when it comes to women and sexual assaults, we are actually safer in a dark alley than we are in our own homes.

Statistically speaking the majority of sexual assaults- male on female as well as male on male - are perpetrated by people we are acquainted with NOT strangers.

(so when you're teaching your youngins' never to talk with strangers, they probably should learn that when they're being molested or assaulted by Uncle Johnny, a stranger would be a good person to tell!)

I would also make an argument in defense of 'graffiti/street art...there is a lot of awesome street art out there. What I really hate, and think is a blight on the urban landscape is the random 'tagging'.

I happen to really appreciate a talented artist and his/her graffiti or street art.

this has been debated several times here in various contexts and i think is an interesting debate and one that merits a good discussion (go back to the interview with blutt, for example).

however, i will stand by the opinion that there is a HUGE difference between tagging/etching and wheat pasting and things that have some real aesthetic value -- things that make *me* at least smile or think or slow down and take a moment in my oh so urban day.

secondly, regardless of someone's take on street art, a 25 year old man was senselessly killed. that's tragic no matter how you cut it, imo.

The kid that killed brandon has stabbed other people at parties in the past. He has a history of pulling knives on people when he's drunk, as well as self-mutilating. It's not even remotely gang-related. Dude is just mental.

And as an aside, Solve is the only artist who consistently got up on the north side consistently and made my bike rides more interesting. It's amazing how much that dude got up and made the neighborhood more interesting to look at.

Look, I know Kirk, and he has NEVER stabbed anyone at parties, nor mutilated himself. Granted, I dont know what happened that night, but there is a lot of talk going around, and you just cant listen to everything you hear. There is also ALOT of people saying it wasnt just Kirk, and that another "murderer" got off, people that were there said this. People need to step up and tell the authorities what they saw, this is undoubtedly a horrible tragedy, and many have been affected. Justice will be served, but people need to tell what they know because as even the detectives have been saying, this case is not coming together as it should, and if people who had something to do with it are out...they need pay for what they've done
