Swooning for Swans

Swans! Two baby swans that hatched at Lincoln Park Zoo a month ago will soon be part of a program that is helping to repopulate the Midwest with Trumpeter Swans*, a once-endangered breed which was almost completely eliminated from the Midwest in the early 1900’s.

In the fall, the swans will be taken to a wetland in Iowa, under the care of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The swans are free to select their own mate for the winter, and will be released into the wild in the spring.

Up to this point, Lincoln Park Zoo has contributed 33 juvenile swans to the Trumpeter Swan Restoration Program. [abc7, image via Joe M500]

Loved that book! Was totally convinced for a while there that one could actually teach animals (not just swans) to communicate with people if you only taught them how to read. I was young, and optimistic.

Kristina- would you really want to know what swans (or mice, or pigs) have to say? maybe not so much ;)

I was *obsessed* with that book, holy crap.

Is that the book in which the swan orders like 12 watercress sandwiches, one with mayonaisse and the rest without? Holy flashback.

Anyone see the two pair of wild swans that took up in Jackson Harbor over the winter? I think they've taken off since, but it was amazing to see them take their winter there.
