CPS Gives Car to 12-Year-Old

Chicago Public Schools gave a car to a 12-year-old for perfect attendance over a three-month period.

This is the first time the schools system has given away a car to encourage attendance. By attending school every day within any one of three time periods, a total of 189,115 students were eligible for the Dodge Caliber. Of those, about 150 names were randomly selected, and those students and their parents were invited to a dealership on South Western Avenue on Monday morning to put a key in the ignition and see if the engine would roar to life.

Congrats and everything, rising 7th grader Ashley Martinez, but....you're supposed to go to school. [Trib]

My high school gave away a car for some dumb raffle ticket thing we were forced to do. The guy who won it was a freshman and couldn't drive it for another 2 years.

It was a Geo Tracker if I recall. How sad that we thought such a thing was a prize back then.

Part of this is to encourage parents to make sure their kids are going to school. That is one of the many parental duties assigned when a kid is born.

Albany: Are you sure the Geo Tracker wasn't a punishment of some kind?

Hey, my grades are shitty but I showed up! Where's my car? (Un-fucking-believable.)

The biggest things we got in the Catholic school I went to was Holy Cards.

Even better, my high school followed up the Geo Tracker with a "classic car". A 50's roadster thing (I don't know cars) that sat in the lobby.

It leaked oil and smelled like old people.

A few years later this same school instituted mandatory drug tests for students

St. Patrick High School, doing it real classy!

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THE F&*%^$#CK!!!!!!!!!!

I got noth'n to say Fu*c'n stupid!

Oh what about some rims perhaps!?! I mean we gotta encourage "values" right?!

God, tell me somebody donated this thing, and that this isn't where CPS is putting its barely-there budget.

I don't know why perfect attendance should be such a big deal. Going to school when you're sick is stupid. What if you contract leprosy two days before the end date of the contest? Should you really being sucking it up and going to school on the off chance you'll win a car that you're too young to drive?

And, please, next time give one away that gets more the 24 miles a gallon city.

a car?

seriously?

i hope those weren't my tax dollars.

the last thing we need in this city is more cars!

I know someone who got a perfect attendance award one year in 5th grade.

It embarrassed her to get this award because all of the other awards being handed out were for some kind of outstanding accomplishment like straight A's or science experiments and essays and such.

She always thought that the perfect attendance award was just something so that anyone who didn't get the best grades could "feel good" about getting an award.
And it actually had the opposite effect. But then again...all she got was a lousy ribbon with gold letters on it.

If the prize for perfect attendance were a car, I think she would have overcome her shame.

So now we are giving parents extravagant rewards for...doing their jobs as parents?

Pathetic.

It was donated by the dealership

At my high school, if you got more than 2 unexcused absences, you failed the class.

This is absurd, how about rewarding with a valuable education.

You don't show up to school you don't graduate, just like if you don't show up to work, you don't get paid or you get fired.
