City Rabbits!

2008_6_ashes.jpgDid you know that the City of Chicago's Animal Care and Control also has rabbits for adoption? Ashes is one of six eight-month-old male rabbits in the city's cat adoption room, and he's available for adoption right away.

As we learned with Hyacinth, rabbits are easy to train and can not only learn to come when called, they can cohabitate with other household pets. Because they are curious and sometimes restless, it's important to "rabbit-proof" your home. That means making sure they can't get at electrical cords or wires that might get chewed. In fact, the human that posted Ashes also put together this nifty webpage explaining how to make rabbit cages for your home that are comfortable and spacious.

ACC has lots of great pets that are just waiting to be adopted. If Ashes isn't what you're looking for in a pet, pay a visit to 27th and Western and find your perfect pet.

Kevin, stop perpetuating the myth that bunnies are like little dogs that you can easily train. Most of them are not. That line of thinking contributes to the number of people who abandon pet rabbits -- they were expecting a bunny that acts like a dog and didn't get one.

I had a bunny that interacted amazingly well with my very, very large breed dog. They were so cute together. I have a picture of them taking a nap snuggled up together.

The rabbit's cage was in a corner of the dining room and we left the cage door open for her to come and go as she pleased. The dog and rabbit played chase games together.

I know several people who had pet rabbits who were just allowed to roam free. One lived in a Lincoln Park row house, the front yard was fenced in and the bunny just hung out in the front yard when the weather was nice.

Another friend has a pet bunny and that thing is like 11 years old!!
If you take good care of them, they have pretty long life spans.

But, Slaphappy, you are correct in that a lot of people get them and then abandon them when they don't live up to expectations.

The real problem is that too many people don't want to deal with all of the extra responsibility because in all honesty...they are a pain in the ass to take care of. You have to clean that cage out every freaking day or it stinks! They're a lot of work.

Ashes looks like Bo Jackson's sister with herpes all over her face.
