Kanye Throws Bonnaroo Blogger-Tantrum

2008_06_25kanye.jpgSigh. As one of the few Kanye apologists remaining, we're finding it harder and harder to defend some of Mr. West's antics these days. First, there was the infamous Sunrise Show at Bonnaroo, followed by a bevy of bad feedback from festival-goers. Now, almost two weeks later, Kanye has taken to his blog to defend himself. To wit:

I am sick of negative people who just sit around trying 2 plot my downfall... Why???? I understand if people don't like me because I like me or if people think tight clothes look gay or people say I run my mouth to much, But this Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I've ever had in my life. This is the most offended I've ever been... this is the maddest I ever will be. I'm typing so fucking hard I might break my fucking Mac book Air!!!!!!!! Call me any name you want....arrogant, conceited, narcissistic, racist, metro, fag whatever you can think of.... BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN'T GIVE MY ALL! NEVER SAY I DIDN'T GIVE MY ALL! THIS SHOWS NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO BE GOOD AT SOMETHING THERE WILL BE PEOPLE THERE TO LIE ABOUT YOU AND BRING YOU DOWN!

Kanye then goes into the specs of his stage show, claims Bonnaroo should have released a statement defending him, blames Pearl Jam for ending an hour late, and explains why he doesn't perform "Stronger" in the daytime: "THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE ... I HAVE A FUCKING LIGHT SHOW DUMB ASS, IT'S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS!" Fair enough. Still, we wouldn't want to be Cee-Loo if Gnarls Barkley's set runs long at Lolla.

Just sayin: he doesn't have control of whether or not the other bands go long, has invested time and money into a light show that he believes compliments the music in such a way that the set wouldn't be as strong w/o the effects...

that being said, all of his admittedly decent points are totally negated by him calling everyone "SQUID BRAINS" which is pretty much the worst insult ever.

Also: Gawker had this up about 8 hours ago.

Squid brains! Brilliant put-down. I'm gonna start throwing insults out there like Clam Joints and Sponge Shins.

Also, I'm pretty sure Cee-Lo could take on Kanye any day. Just sayin'.

campco, where have you been? While Chicagoist has newsiness down, they're not so much ones for timeliness... which is fine with me cause it's like a microcosm of our sweet, wonderful but sometimes slow on the uptake city. And even still, I'd say they also break plenty of Chicago-worthy stories before other blogs, too.

Awwwww, Kanye's gonna break his Macbook Air. Wonder if he'll chip a finely manicured nail when that happens.

His next album should be called ACCOUNTABILITY.

Sounds like an ice princess to me...

Its great to know that KW owns, and rages on his personal (fucking) MAC. BOOK. AIR. air. air (echoes continue).

I can NOT help but think of that Beck song (Mutherfuker)... which I would like to dedicate it to Mr fuckpants himself. Maybe he owns the cd, and possibly has it within his iTunes on his MAC. BOOK. AIR. air. air (echoes continue).

Im so sick of this guy. Its not even your own gig. You’re an invited artist, you play when you’re told to play in the time allotted to play. Your ass should have been out there at some point during that two hours singing, or apologizing for the delay or doing SOMETHING instead of sitting on your tour bus waiting. If your set doesn’t fit on the stage allotted, then you accommodate. I can’t believe he blames Bonnaroo organizers, Pearl Jam, and anyone else who inconveniences him instead of taking some accountability. Mr. West, I will certainly NOT be attending your show at Lollapalooza.

I kind of hope that he has troubles at Lollapalooza, too. I'm no Kanye fan, but his stage show does sound pretty interesting (if not a bit of a rip on Daft Punk's show), but there's no way I'd miss NIN to see him. Maybe if the crew drags their feet I can see a bit of his show after NIN has finished. Doubtful though, because the city is pretty strict about the Grant Park Curfew...

I'm with you, E. I would love to see both of them, but NIN takes top seed, so I wouldn't mind a Kanye delay, even if it is wishful thinking.

If his music was any good, it wouldn't need a fancy light show to impress people.

Just sayin'.

I actually feel bad for all the Kanye bad press. Yes, Pearl Jam was an hour late. . something tells me that stage crews are also probably running a little longer on tear down and set up at that hour in the morning too, especially if they've been working long hours.

I mean, how many times have you been at a show that you came out specifically just to see (and were not already there for a festival) in Chicago in which it took the artist forever to "set up," and on the 3rd - 4th guitar sound check you realize a serious stall for the artist is in place? Dirty Pretty Things were 1.5 hours late for a set at Schubas b/c they decided to run back to their hotel for a few hours, yet no one blogged about them playing late, just about how they liked the set. There have been plenty of artist with non complicated set ups that took 1-2 hours to get on stage in Chicago...why is Kanye getting all this crap? Sorry people were cranky and tired at 3 am, and that now everyone has to blog instantly from their phones to voice their anger. If you didn't like waiting. . perhaps you should have bailed at an hour late, or 40 minutes late and checked out some other shows.

Uhm, what Kinda computer was that again? Oh a Mac book Air., Sorry I missed that

But seriously Kanye Pest, opps sorry I mean Kanye West has alot to give the world! Which is why I think he should go and run for some political office in Tuvalu!

PS Mich. . .Generally at festivals, they grab the artist at the backstage trailor or bus that they give them to prep for the show. They are generally instructed to be at that location at a certain time by the festival production crew. When the stage is almost setup and ready for the artist, they generally grab them via a golf cart and run them over to the set. Kanye was probably waiting and angry at the wait as well.

I'm not a fan of his work, but I feel like you can't talk S&*t if you have no idea how festival setups or stage management works, or were there to witness and understand everything that led to his delay.

lamgray... thanks for the update - I dated a musician, and I have friends who organize a particular music festival - I generally know how these things work.

I think an apology along with an explanation on Kanye's part would have been nicer than placing blame on other people or TYPING IN ALL CAPS to yell at his concert-goers. But that is something that Kanye has never done, and probably will never do. Its always someone elses fault, or people do not see things his way so they are wrong.

ooooh i'm just sooo ungry i'm going to break my computa!!! Kanye the Clown once again proves why he's more of a diva than an artist. I could understand his argument about wanting to start the set when it was dark out, but to all those that were there, he didn't actually get on stage until after 4 a.m. and the sun was coming up ... about halfway through his set it was light enough that he likely would have been playing at dusk if he got on stage when he was actually scheduled to.

Kanye continues to show why this is really just all about him. It's all about his inflated ego, it's all about what he wants to do ... He's not hip hop. J-Dilla, Jay Z, Guilty Simpson, Madlib, Black Thought, etc. that's hip hop. Kanye's a fucking clown, a fucking show and the ego trip ends here. That NIN set Sunday night at Lolla keeps looking better and better.

All he needed to do was use the microphone he had in his hand to explain what the problem was and the crowd probably would have been more forgiving.

Oh sorry, dating a musician does make you an expert on the production of a large music festival. But, no honestly, I'm not trying to be snarky or snobby towards you. I'm just trying to defend something based upon what I know of large scale festival organization, and I'm by no means any expert on the matter.

Frankly, the organizers would have the stage setups, rider, production staff to execute stage setup, etc from Kanye's team, so if the setup didn't fit the requirements, its most likely a fault of a lack of communication between the organizers and Kanye's management team. Perhaps his team is at fault, perhaps the production company, who knows really, we weren't there.

I was just trying to say that at these concerts, the way things run are coordinated by the organizers and production staff, and our generally out of the artist hands. The artists play when they are told to for the period of them time they are told to, or they don't get paid. This is why Broken Social Scene couldn't play one more song two years ago, though they were DIEING to at Lollapalooza. I've been backstage at several of these festivals (as a part of the production crew (photography) in some cases) to witness how it all works and have many friends that work on production organization.

I understand, and also agree that this wasn't the best verbiage to use for Kanye, but it is in fact a blog. . .Take it for what you will. Probably would have been the best for him just not to comment on it at all.

I'm just trying to say that I think it is unfair to place all of the blame for the tardiness on Kanye and defending that it was most likely not his fault. He was most likely wanting to play, on time, to his fans, just as much as his fans were wanting to see him perform.

I think a lot of people are taking their own angst against disliking his music or overall demeanor and turning it around to finding an issue with his performance. If you weren't at the festival waiting for him to play even (which I'm assuming most of you weren't as you arent' fans), then why proclaim that he owes an apology? Even more so, why do we all even care? We really shouldn't. I guess you are a fan, or you're not, and this event should not effect that.

@lamgray

you defeated your own argument not once, but twice in your post:

"I'm just trying to defend something based upon what I know of large scale festival organization, and I'm by no means any expert on the matter."

this is your first contradiction ... you then go on to explain things in further detail how musicians and festival organizers operate with one another - though you state that you really don't know.

"I was just trying to say that at these concerts, the way things run are coordinated by the organizers and production staff, and our generally out of the artist hands. The artists play when they are told to for the period of them time they are told to, or they don't get paid."

number two ... Kanye didn't go on when he was told to. He didn't even go on an 1 1/2 hours after his stage was set, he instead waited another hour or so. I understand PJ running long, but in all honesty, Kanye's stage was set up nearly an hour later - he didn't come on because it was "dark" enough for him. at least, that's how his argument is standing up.

"I'm just trying to say that I think it is unfair to place all of the blame for the tardiness on Kanye and defending that it was most likely not his fault. He was most likely wanting to play, on time, to his fans, just as much as his fans were wanting to see him perform."

It was his fault - period. end of story.

How did I contradict myself?

I didn't say I didn't know, I just didn't claim to be an expert in the matter. For instance, I am no residential expert on bees, but I know they do not have knees. That's not a contradiction. That said, I do not know the ins and outs of every organized music festival, nor have I planned one, but I explained what I have witnessed, in person, not by hearsay or conjecture.

How do you know that he didn't go on when he was told to? Were you there? Did you tell him when to go on? Were you running the show?

Doubtful.

You don't know who's fault it actually was, you just assume.

I think its absurd for people that weren't even at the stage waiting to watch Kanye to comment on how he owes the world an apology.

Why don't you nag CSS for an apology for bailing on Lollapalooza last year by simply not showing up and placing a last minute call as well?

I hope people commenting actually read his whole "rant." It sounds like he and his team worked hard to fit their production into the festival's setup. (You can 'squish' some band's 18 off-beat, stoned drum circle guys, you can't 'squish' the prefabricated elements in Kanye's show.) He was willing to take a goofy time slot so that the quality of his show would be preserved.

You can question whether or not his whole "Vegas musical" production is really necessary, but he felt that it was, and he worked hard to present it with the best quality possible at that festival. He took the risk of bringing his show to a festival where he was "out of place". It was probably a waste of his time to participate in a festival that puts a yawn-inducing act like Pearl Jam on in a prime slot (and then let's them run long..), but he was willing to take that "out of the box" risk, and deserves credit for it.

Sure, give him crap for his brand name dropping, but give him credit for his dedication and hard work to provide the best show for the audience that he can.

I think IAMGAY is Kanye West incognito.

You are SO creative!!!

Wow, you changed the L in to an I. . .Then you changed GRAY to GAY. . .No one has EVER thought to do that to my last name.

Who would have thought the email address they assigned to me in college could go from Lamgray to IAMGAY. . .Seriously, why didn't I think of that EVER.

That was pretty funny lamgray, but seriously, do you wear those white sunglasses popularized by Kanye? Are they going on today?

No. . .sigh. . .my quest to become a cool, fashionable individual is yet again delayed by this thing called a job. . .my quest will have to be delayed until this evening, thank god urban outfitters is open at night!

I was hoping I could meet you out Spook, sporting my new shades for some PBR to discuss the quiznotes version of Dostoyevsky that I downloaded via my Mac Air Book that my new sunglasses will also match. You in?

Lamgray, don't try to out clever me or I will do to you what ever Margaret did to Spav1. Not that I know exactly happened or that I have the deep pocked resources that Margaret has due to her ties to Oprah, where she is able to make folks just vanish with out a trace
