Celebrate Your Independence Bob Barker–Style

6-1-2008-chicagoist-dog.jpgNow might be the time to adopt that dog you keep saying you're going to get. Animal shelters throughout Illinois are taking in hundreds of dogs and cats in need of new homes due to the recent flooding in nearby communities. Sally Matay, president of Illinois Animal Rescue, is receiving up to 1,000 e-mails a day from people looking for a good home for their pets as many families lost their houses or just can't financially afford them anymore.

Now might also be a good time to start that volunteering thing you keep meaning to do. Volunteers are working day and night to save these animals from being euthanized by rescuing them and taking them to no-kill animal shelters throughout the state. Volunteers from PAWS Chicago traveled to Cedar Rapids, IA last Sunday and PAWS is calling for volunteers to help out July 2-5, as vans of rescued animals will be returning back to Chicago and in need of extra care. We think there's time to squeeze in volunteering/adopting this weekend in between your friend's BBQ and the fireworks. And we also want to adopt Glimmer. And hug all of them . Including Knuckles, pictured.

And as Bob Barker would say, if you have a pet, PLEASE spay/neuter it!! There are way too many animals in shelters out there.

Just signed up! Saturday 12-2. Yip!

Don't forget about Chicago Canine Rescue too! This organization helps give a second chance to animals slated for euthanasia because they are too old, too young, too injured, have disabilities, or have simply been overlooked for too long by potential adopters at other shelters.

They are need of volunteers to adopt, foster, walk the pups, take them to and from adoption events, work at the adoption events, help out in the office, or even monetary donations. Please consider helping out any of these worthy organizations, including CCRF, today! The pups (and kittens too) need you!

I just signed up too!! And I may have gotten a friend to go with me...yay helping animals!

When you're thinking of volunteering (in general, not just this weekend), please keep the city's Animal Care & Control shelter in mind as well. They are always in need of volunteers - but don't get alot of the press that PAWS & Anti-Cruelty do around town so people forget about them.

(My dog is an ACS alumn so I'm a bit biased :-)

We too got our dog from AC&C and he is the best. And they were so so so happy to see us in there looking for a pup. I don't think they get nearly the visitors that the Humane Society or Paws gets.
