One Great Sandwich: Eat Green Local's Meatball Sandwich

2008_06_meatball.jpg

One of the great things about shopping at farmers markets is having the luxury to grab a quick bite while looking for deals. Green City Market has Hoosier Mama pies, fresh crepes, organic baked goods from Bleeding Heart Bakery, fresh juices and smoothies, among noshables.

A new addition to the market this year is Eat Green Local, a subsidiary of the folks from Sunday Dinner Club. We met Sunday Dinner's Jason Stern during our visit Saturday. Stern said that their sandwiches are made using beef from Heartland Meats, bread from Bennison's Bakery and fresh greens from other vendors. We placed an order for a meatball sandwich ($10) during the lunch rush, which meant that we were in for a long wait.

Rather than stew at the wait, we finished our shopping and came back in time to a piping hot meatball sandwich. The meatballs had that rich, buttery flavor we've come to enjoy from Heartland Meats, covered in a light seasoned marinara and served with mesclun greens and arugula. Having ridden to market from Bridgeport fueled on an iced mocha and doughnut, this sandwich put the tiger back in our tank.

$10.00 for that sandwich? Insane in the membrane!

Gotta agree with kdjk5467 on this one -- $10 for a meatball sub? It looks amazing (although I prefer my meatball subs swimming in red gravy), my guess is that the ingredient cost is the primary factor in the high cost of that sandwich.

Don't knock it 'til you try it. This is one of the lighter meatball sandwiches you'll ever have. Healthy and lean, not like anything that'll sit in your stomach from a hot dog stand.

Again, Chuck, I think the sandwich looks fantastic. And, I'm hardly "knocking" it; I mostly pointing to the fact that this particular sub, which looks to be about 4-5 inches in length, is, quite honestly, expensive. Still want to try it. However, after your last article on the farmers' market and shopping on a budget, this is hardly budget-minded....definitely foodie-minded, though.

I beg to differ, frp. How do you think I managed to afford it?

Is this "Eat Green Local" sandwich served in styrofoam? hmmmm...

I'd pay ten bucks for that sandwich. It looks really good!

addresses are always handy when you review food from someplace.
