Emanuel Lopez, 19, was sentenced to 60 days in jail today for stealing a 2-pound Pomeranian puppy and then blowing marijuana smoke in the dog's face until the animal "passed out." Judge John Kinsella said the behavior was "the bottom rung of humanity."
Lopez was convicted of stealing the dog from a Petland in Naperville with the help of two of the store's employees. According to the Assistant State's Attorney prosecuting the case, "no one enticed him to abuse the puppy...[there's] no excuse for what he did to the puppy." The dog is fine and has been adopted.
The dog...is really really cute. And if you like Pomeranians, Bella seems pretty awesome. [Trib]

Low on the ladder rung, as well, are PET STORES that sell puppies and kittens because they usually all come from PUPPY MILLS
where abuse and neglect run rampant.
If you're hell bent on getting a puppy, at least go to a reputable breeder who does this as a hobby and raises the puppies in their homes as part of the family...not in cages where they are stacked one on top of the other.
If you're buying from a pet store you're over paying for a dog that is probably full of problems and congenital defects because the mills don't care about breeding. They just care about the money.
And if the pet store says they got the puppy from a breeder, I call bullshit. Any reputable breeder is not going to sell one of their dogs to a pet store.
That poor little puppy....but I have no sympathy for the Naperville pet store.

Oh come on, what teenager hasn't gotten a dog high?
So how much time would he have gotten if he stole the pup and just did normal Pom stuff with it, like making it wear hats and frog costumes & such? And how did they even find out that he got the dog stoned? Something's very, very wrong with this story - I suspect a conspiracy, possibly at the highest levels.
