The Boston Phoenix Thinks It Knows Illinois Music

The Boston Phoenix is tackling an ambitious music project: naming each state's best bands with its 50 Bands, 50 States feature. The criteria: for Best Band, it must have been formed in the state; for solo artist, he/she must have been born in the state; and for best new band, they must count as "undiscovered" by the Phoenix. For Illinois, their choices were:

All-Time Best Band: Big Black
All-Time Best Solo Artist: Miles Davis
Best New Band: Chandeliers

Well then. We find it hard to argue with the Miles Davis selection, but we're not so sure about the Best Band category. We're sure there are some Smashing Pumpkin and Wilco fans scratching their heads. Us? We're wondering where the hell's the love for Styx. [Ed. note: Or Cheap Trick?] And for Best New Band, there are too many talented bands in the area to count, so we'll leave it to our readers to shout out their suggestions.

And here's some Wednesday Miles & Coltrane for your listening/viewing pleasure.

Art Ensemble of Chicago

Also, reading some of the other state choices...

Dr. Dre as California's all time greatest solo artist? Mary J. Blige for New York?

At least they got Massachusetts' Band (The Pixies) and Mississippi's best solo artist (Robert Johnson) right.

should have been wilco

i've never even heard of big black

Kind of Blue improves any day. Nice selection. Still gives me the chills to see those two guys playing together.

If Miles counts can Sun Ra and his Arkestra count?

"i've never even heard of big black"

Don't admit that in public, brgabriel!

Big Black>>>>>Wilco>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Liz Phair>>>>shit>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Smashing Pumpkins

Um, Curtis Mayfield anyone? Anyone?

Either a bitter ex-fan or someone who likes Steve Albini way too much.

Yeah, I'd take Curtis Mayfield/Impressions over everyone mentioned here.

Sorry, I've got to go with Boston. Big Black FTW.

Don't know Chandeliers, though, and I'm fairly up on the local music scene.

Not for the top honor for me personally, but I have to at least mention Material Issue here. They were great.

Big Black > Wilco (early)
Big Black and later Wilco are both great.

Smashing Pumpkins.....errr...no thank you..please take it away..

Big + for Curtis Mayfield.

There are endless blues, soul and jazz musicians that are worthy though.

Blues/Jazz/Soul > Chicago indie rock.

You are not referring to Wilco as indie rock are you Navin?

They aren't a reggaeton band are they?

They are signed to a major label, and in a genre more accurately described as alt-country. You can wide paint brush stroke it as "Chicago indie rock" if you want, but you would be wrong.

Oh, you're being pedantic.

Whatever man, go to a concert and you'll see a bunch of white indie rockers...

I'd be embarrased if I even said the words 'alt-country' so you won't get me to argue with you about what that is.

I have been to many Wilco concerts (and many indie rock crowds) and would never ever refer to the crowd as "indie rockers". It actually is an older 30's somethings crowd. So please stop stereotyping.

You might not like the term alt-country, and if its usage embarrasses you I am sorry. But thats on you. It is a far more accurate term than indie rock.

In the long run it doesnt matter at all, its just annoying when people make blanket statements as if they are some absolute truth.

My bad I meant (and many indie rock concerts)
not many indie rock crowds.
