I have been to many Wilco concerts (and many indie rock crowds) and would never ever refer to the crowd as "indie rockers". It actually is an older 30's somethings crowd. So please stop stereotyping. You might not like the term alt-country, and if its usage embarrasses you I am sorry. But thats on you. It is a far more accurate term than indie rock. In the long run it doesnt matter at all, its just annoying when people make blanket statements as if they are some absolute truth.

They are signed to a major label, and in a genre more accurately described as alt-country. You can wide paint brush stroke it as "Chicago indie rock" if you want, but you would be wrong.

Big Black > Wilco (early) Big Black and later Wilco are both great. Smashing Pumpkins.....errr...no thank you..please take it away.. Big + for Curtis Mayfield. There are endless blues, soul and jazz musicians that are worthy though. Blues/Jazz/Soul > Chicago indie rock.
