It's a blessing and a curse to live so close to Skylark (2149 S. Halsted). The latter, of course, is that it's often hard to walk home after a long night of inebriation through moderation. the blessing is that their food menu goes a long way toward taking some of the starch out of the dog that bit us.
Since we're now starting to hit the really humid days of summer, we wanted something light to pair with tomorrow's "Beer of the Week" selection. The grilled tuna sandwich ($9) seemed like the way to go. It's a good-sized tuna steak, grilled medium rare and served on toasted rye with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, horseradish aioli and sides of cole slaw and Skylark's famous tater tots.
The ingredient that brings this sandwich together is the aioli. We're not the biggest fans of mayonnaise (it's the white man's poison), but the inclusion of horseradish gave it a nice bright spice that worked well with the tuna steak and the cucumber. That we got to enjoy this while listening to our old friend Brian Page spinning classic country music while on his shift was a bonus.

Im a big fan of their tater-tots. 3 dipping sauces?!?!?!
Total yum... and nothing beats their taters.
That looks really good, but once again, you failed to include the address. Not everyone knows all the hipster joints.
a hefty dose of crispy tots, STAT!!
One Great Sandwich.
Location: Somewhere in Chicago
holy tuna! that looks so yummy... yes, where is this place exactly?
It's on the corner of Halsted and Cermak
thanks for making me drool on my keyboadfbvzkdfbvj.
the white man's poison
And how!
"It's on the corner of Halsted and Cermak"
I remember the days when you could get scrimps on that corner. now it's all gussied up.
Sorry about that, xlprg. We're trying to make a more concerted effort to include addresses with reviews or at least links to other reviews related to the places we frequent so that you don't have to guess or go to Google Maps.
In addition to including the address now in the review (wait for the servers to refresh), I'll also leave it here. Skylark's exact addy is 2149 S. Halsted.
And that sammich is worth the trip.
On that corner? Do you mean over on Canal?
Navin: that would be Lawrence's Fisheries over by 22nd ("Cermak") and Canal.
Ah yes, Skylark. Favreau's bar in "The Break-Up".
They lost me when they got ride of the gumbo
opps, well you know what I mean
is lawrence fisheries still there? I want some scrimps!
I live right down the street too, and keep meaning to try the food at Skylark, but always just end up drinking and stumbling home. This sandwich may just change that pattern...
this has always been my favorite menu item at skylark and have had it more times than I can count
but last I went, it was only $8 and I still miss the dark rye bread they used to use.
also, their daily specials are amazing.
Chuck,
Yeah I know, used to live just a couple blocks from Lawrence's. Matty's talking about Cermak and Halsted, I can't recall anything being there in the way of scrimps but it was a while ago when I lived there (pre skylark), so maybe it was before.. I was assuming maybe he meant was thinking of Lawrence's.
Well, there is that greasy spoon across the street, but they're mainly known for gyros and burritos.
Until then I'll keep waiting for the new Lula to open.
In Logan Square there exists a "Thou Shall Not Say Any Thing Bad Against Lula Rule"iIf you wanna get laid by any women in Logan Square.
Seriously, yo, that place needs to get over itself, and how and fast!
And the next time they serve grits, they damn sure as Hell, better have some real hot sauce! WTF!
Its like Omar Little having milk but no Honey Nut Cheerios to go with it!
Spook,
My only consolation is that maybe that new Pilsen Lula will draw away a little bit of the skylark crowd that I'd not really miss being around.
