City Sees More Shootings Thursday Morning

2008_07_10_shootings.jpgJust as Alderman Isaac Carothers is calling out top Cop Jody Weis, Chicago saw Thursday morning open with more shootings. The first happened on the North Side, in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood, around 3 a.m. A 24 year-old man was shot in the 5600 block of North Winthrop Avenue following what witnesses described as an argument with another man. The victim is currently in critical condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

A pair of shootings also plagued the South Side. First, police discovered the body of a man in his Woodlawn home shortly after 4 a.m., dead from a gunshot wound to the neck. The home is located in the 6300 block of South St. Lawrence Ave. An Englewood man was injured in a drive-by shooting around 9 a.m. in the 6700 block of South Throop Street. The man suffered a bullet wound to the torso and was taken to Oak Lawn's Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.

Please see earlier post.

Why would you do this to us Chicagoist? :)

riddle me this, chicagoist commenters ...

i used to live right by here at bryn mawr/broadway and ridge. earlier in my stays in chicago, i lived at argyle and winthrop.

why is it that despite the potential attraction to live near the lake, the property and scene on the lake side of the red line is always major sketchorama? drug deals, crime and overall shadiness. you go west of the el, and it's all tree-lined streets and niceness.

what gives? ??

1. Winthrop and Kenmore are overrun with subsidized and Section 8 housing. If it was all dismantled and sold at market value, the problems would go away. But ...

2. In Chicago it's very difficult to evict a bad tenant.

3. In Chicago, it's very difficult to punish a slumlord. See: http://www.edgewatercommunitycouncil.org/content/view/54/86/

Mikely

Whats wrong with section 8?

Wintrhop and Kenmore is in uptown and has had a history of social unrest for the last 50 years.

I still love the area though. If it wasn't for this blackhole called wicker park I'd move back there.

Hey the friday morning death count just went up 1 dead 1 wounded in Beverly, the chicagoist could start keeping trak this could be fun like a game who lives closest to the latest killings.

matty - winthrop and kenmore run parallel to each other, and run through many neighborhoods. when i lived at grace and kenmore, a block from wrigley field, it wasn't really murder/crack central.

Growing up and stomping around Edgewater and Rogers Park as a kid, I always chalked it up to being the simple condition of playing good block/bad block.
