Mayor Daley just announced he is putting the fire commisioner in charge of OEMC (911center) that was one of Wiess responsibilites. I think we are witnessing the exFBI agent having his N@ts cut off and Jessie isnt the one doing it. Obviousley Wiess didnt make alot of friends with the changes he made in the police dept. and the alderman and mayor were waiting for a chance to start the death by a thousand cuts. And don't talk to me about "caring". Your breed of caring is like the parent who looks the other way while the kids get high in the basement. Your kind of caring is the friend who doesn't step up and say "Do you have to get drunk whenever we go out?". Your kind of caring is apathy mixed with pity and piety. Racism is about assuming qualities are inherent to a given race. That Black people are poor because they are meant to be or Hispanics are hard-working intrinsically. Saying "This behavior in your community is unacceptable and needs to be addressed by your community." isn't racist. It's what should be expected of everyone. Here are the number of homicides in Chicago for each month for the last 11 (sorry for the bad data chart, no table support by Chicagoist). Included is the % change for the same month in the previous year. Looks to me like the number is all over the place and not all that indicative the POLCOM or policies. In fact for the best month (Nov 2007) of improvement there was no police commissioner approved by the council at all! Month # % change 2007 Jul 44 -32.3% Aug 46 43.8% Sep 50 -12.3% Oct 39 -2.5% Nov 29 -32.6% Dec 34 3.0% 2008 Jan 34 30.8% Feb 20 -4.8% Mar 33 -19.5% Apr 47 34.3% May 43 26.5% My point is that these numbers are the result of a multitude of variables. For Carothers to single out the POLCOM in his first five months on the job as the cause indicates a lack of, shall we say, intellectual rigor on the alderman's part. On a serious note: It kills me that people always get that Kanye quote wrong. He clearly stated that "George Bush doesn't care about black people" not "George Bush doesn't like black people"...I think the difference is important. It is totally possible to like someone or a group of someones without caring about them, similar to how I feel about most celebrities. But to imply that you do or don't care says implicitly that you are also invested that that groups well-being. I truly feel like Kanye's emotional, off-the-cuff remark was an astute piece of political commentary (Why should George Bush care about black people, only 1 in 10 voted for him right?)... I think that this is sort of the way you feel about black people Albany. Maybe you know some that you like, or think that Bill Cosby and Chris Rock are funny and good, but to the extent of anything else, it seems like you are really content to sit from the sidelines with the attitude of "I won't help people who won't help themselves". And that is not caring.

I wonder how long the citys teachers wold work without a contract or the citys garbagemen. The city gave the teachers, carpenters, CTA, electricans, streets and san, laborers, water dept workers, teamsters nice new contracts before the old ones expired but ignored the cops and firemen. Yeah everyone will say f the police but I wouldnt work in my trade without a contract. so I actually dont expect them to care much. Gas has gone up along with everyting imaginable but the city is screwing the cops and firemen. Daley wouldnt dream of doing this to any of the unions that could strike. Wiess is the fall guy for corrupt merit promotions based on who you know or are related to (Ike Carouthers brother is twice merit promoted in the CPD) that has destroyed the managment in the CPD. It will take wiess along time to fix this dept I am sure but destroying morale by not even negotiating a contract until after the old one expires and piss on the dept every chance is why the police dont care anymore. plus it appears they are severly undermanned and have most cars working with one Ofc on afternoons and midnights so dont expect alot from the police. I would lay the blame right back at the mayors and city councils feet.

Race in the USA is a twisted issue with countless aspects. Applying a label of racist and/or bigot is a most often a simpleminded response to either arguments that include nuance, or arguments that lack clarity for one reason or another. @ Matilda: According to the CPD's data website, http://gis.chicagopolice.org, there have been 200 murders in last 180 days. In 2007 there were 442 murders. By my math that makes the 2008 projected murder total lower than 2007 not an increase. Another site chicago.everyblock.com lists 205 homicides from 1/1/2008-6/30/08. Well, the murder rate so far this year is up by a double-digit percentage, so that seems more serious and real than killer sharks.

Isn't the crime drop in NYC during the 90's attributed mainly to an improving economy? As the economy is currently faltering that could have more to do than anything the POLCOM does. Also is there really an increase? Or is "crime is increasing" the killer sharks story of the Chicago media? Discuss

If nothing else, Weis has done a lousy job with PR. He has a highly visible job, has made controversial early moves, and has said very little publicly about the alarming crimes that have taken place on his watch. Even if he can't be blamed for failing to prevent these crimes, he's caused himself headaches by not responding boldly to these events and waiting until he's been hauled up before the City Council. He'll be fighting an uphill battle from now on.

I would think the movement of public-housing people under Hope VI efforts also is playing a role as well, one that few have really commented on, at least in any publication I read every day. The Atlantic in its recent issue had a good article about this, and Chicago gets mentioned even though Memphis is the focus. I urge you to look it up.

I think you don't give full credit to the power of racial politics in Chicago, including decisions/desires among our elected officials about who should hold the top spots. There were many, many officials and people who were, frankly, pissed off that a white man was hired to oversee the cops. That is what mepps seems to be talking about. I fail to see any racism for simply talking about this fact.

It says a lot that the murder/kill rate of CPD kids (mostly/all black)rose to over 30 with no action and then when there is risk of some soccer mom from Naperville getting caught in some crossfire everyone is freaking out and demanding answers that seem pretty obvious to me: we have a shitty economy and it is fucking hot out both these things contribute to normal spikes in violent crime. farce.

If Weis was Black, Carothers wouldn't say anything.- these corruptocrats wanted a black guy in there from the get go (no matter experienced or not), they said so. Weis has been here what, 6 months?! I think he's done more in that time frame to slow the wheels of corruption and begin to implement new policing procedures than Carothers has dreamt about doing for his district in the same time.

The blaming of anybody about the taste shootings is ridiculous. There's nothing you can do to stop a determined person or two from raising hell at an event like that, short of searching everybody who attends.
