Does anyone have an iPhone that is working?

Hundreds of people stood in a line that stretched two blocks long waiting to get a new 3G iPhone at the Michigan Avenue Apple Store yesterday morning, but many were disappointed when they couldn’t get their phones activated. The final step of the process involves connecting to the iTunes store, but problems with the servers prevented many phones from being activated.

Apple Store employees told buyers to go home to finish the activation, but problems still persisted, leaving the phones unusuable except for emergency calls. [S-T]

Apple also reported having problems with the rollout of their new data synching service, MobileMe, which is designed to synchronize users data across multiple devices, including the iPhone. [S-T]

iDiots?

Last year I walked into the Michigan avenue store the day after launch, bought an iPhone, waited for all of about 10 minutes in line. Took it home, listed it on Craigslist and got 200 bucks over retail for it.

It's a really nice phone. But adults in the 21st century should not be waiting in line for hours to buy a PHONE.

Enh. There are lamer things to wait in line/get excited over. And the lines were caused as much by the activation issues as anything else.

The couple people I know who bought one yesterday all have working phones now (and have since late afternoon yesterday), but the couple of them that got through the stupid lines before noon or so got to wait for the activation server issues to clear up.

I'll be waiting a couple more days. I'd rather deal with possible lack-of-inventory issues than have to take a non-functional phone home and wait for Apple's activation servers to be resurrected after being crushed by rather literally the entire world.
