The Mice Keep Winning

2008_07_mouse_in_cheese.jpgFirst it was the advanced civilization found in O'Hare Airport. Then the North Avenue Whole Foods was shut down because of them, sending shoppers into a mild panic and showing that some of Our Town's better newspaper columnists has as loose a grasp on the definition of "irony" as Alanis Morissette.

Now the mice are at it again, this time contributing to the closing of the legendary Soul Queen restaurant in Pill Hill (9031 S. Stony Island). To be fair, the health hazards posed by the rodent infestation were just the tip of the iceberg. Inspectors also found raw food stored at unsafe temperatures, a faulty walk-in cooler, serious grease hazards and raw sewage overflowing from a floor drain near a hand washing sink. Still, none of that would have been found if a diner hadn't called 311 to report that three live (and presumably not blind) mice were seen in the dining room.

Seriously, it is very important to try to abate rodent infestations. However, commercial food businesses, particularly grocery stores, but also restaurants will always have some level of infestation. Some do a better job killing the rodents more quickly and privately than do others.

it's not so much the killing of rodents, it's the cleaning up after them in a timely manner.

Last night, as I was leaving work, I saw a mouse run across the floor. A few hours later, I saw a rat the size of a rabbit run out of the front entry way of my friend's otherwise nice condo building.

More disturbingly, two weeks ago, I walked into my bathroom, groggy as all hell. I looked down, saw a grey mouse and my cat sitting next to it, and thought, "Oh, when did I buy you this toy?" I picked up the tail to throw it for him, and that's when I realized, oh no, this was not a toy. It was, in fact, a dead mouse.

So, you know. That was a cool surprise. I didn't realize my cat was quite so on his game when it came to killing things.

kaylee: lucky. my cat can't even kill silverfish. i do have a video of her partially dismantling a roach, though. (i had to finish the job.)

Okay, disease and dead mouse carcasses aside, you gotta admit: that picture is damned cute.
