Celebrate Summer with National Hotdog Day

chicago%20hot%20dog.jpgAnd LO, the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council said, "Let July be National Hot Dog Month and let Sunday, July 20, 2008 be National Hot Dog Day." And so it was. And it was good.

We were a little surprised to note that most of these places didn't even know about National Hot Dog Day. In fact, one said, "It is? It's Chicahhhgo, Every day is hot dawg day!" You know, we can't really argue with that. There are, admittedly, countless lists of the best places in Chicago to get your fix of dogs and we're highlighting just a few more in the name of this wiener celebration.

1. Murphy's Red Hots (1211 W. Belmont): Come here for dog, old school style. Vienna beef on a nice poppy seed bun with all the right condiments.

2. Hot Doug's (3324 N. California): Check out their website for a list of daily specials along with their daily menu. This isn't the kind of hot dog you can find just anywhere. (And where else can you enjoy some duck fat fries?) Closed on Sundays and for the next two days (the 21st and 22nd) ostensibly for Don Knott's birthday.

3. The Weiner's Circle (2622 N. Clark): They may not great you with a smile but you'll probably forget with that first bite.

And a few just outside of Chicago:

4. Wiener and Still Champion (802 Dempster, Evanstan): Celebrating it's 33rd year in business, this place serves hand dipped corndogs (Dippin' Dogs) and double-fried french fries.

5. Poochies (3832 Dempster, Skokie): We mentioned this joint here and thinks it warrants a visit if you're up North. Named as one of the country's best by Seriouseats.

The best hot dogs I ever had were always at the Glencoe Golf Club. You would order them off the 8th green and pick them up when you finished number 9. It was a husband and wife who ran the kitchen and the food there was awesome. Even had homemade soups. One time they ran out of crackers for the chicken noodle and gave me a perfectly toasted and buttered bagel instead.

Then Glencoe decided they needed to bring in a company (like Aramark or something) to run the kitchen and it was never the same. Don't think I actually played golf there again after realizing those hot dogs were no more.

Murphy's is a great hot dog stand, one that i feel doesn't get enough credit. I love Superdawg and Gene and Jude's and Demon Dogs (pour a little out) but I'd have to say that most of the famous Chicago hot dog places don't even do all of the ingredients. Gene and Jude's I believe only has relish, onions, peppers and mustard, Superdawg has relish, onions, mustard, pickled tomato, pickle but no celery salt, and I think Demon Dogs had the same. Murphy's has, as mentioned above, every ingredient necessary to construct the salad on a bun, and you can get it charred, or foot long, or charred foot long. the shakes are great too, as are the fries.

believe or not the best i've had in chicago are at the home depot on north avenue. sad but true.

@mike_thoms: Amen, brother. I've been a patron of Murphy's for almost 15 years and it's maintained an incredible level of consistent quality that's really the mark of an owner that cares about what's being served to the customers. Bill Murphy is an American hero.

i don't get the whole load it up thing. mustard. onion. 'nuff said.

I can appreciate the simple beauty of the mustard and onion combo when I'm in snack mode (such as at the aforementioned Home Depot), but when it's for a meal I want all the fixin's. Throw in some cheese fries and you've hit all the food groups.

Polishs are far better

I love hot dogs. Almost all of the places I've been around chicagoland generally have good hot dogs. I am pretty easy to please when it comes to hot dogs.
For me the best dog is the one I make at home. All it takes is a good quality dog like a hebrew or vienna and the rest is just preference. I throw some cucumber slices on with the rest of the usual chicago dog stuff. Delicious.
