I love hot dogs. Almost all of the places I've been around chicagoland generally have good hot dogs. I am pretty easy to please when it comes to hot dogs.
For me the best dog is the one I make at home. All it takes is a good quality dog like a hebrew or vienna and the rest is just preference. I throw some cucumber slices on with the rest of the usual chicago dog stuff. Delicious.

I can appreciate the simple beauty of the mustard and onion combo when I'm in snack mode (such as at the aforementioned Home Depot), but when it's for a meal I want all the fixin's. Throw in some cheese fries and you've hit all the food groups.

@mike_thoms: Amen, brother. I've been a patron of Murphy's for almost 15 years and it's maintained an incredible level of consistent quality that's really the mark of an owner that cares about what's being served to the customers. Bill Murphy is an American hero.

Murphy's is a great hot dog stand, one that i feel doesn't get enough credit. I love Superdawg and Gene and Jude's and Demon Dogs (pour a little out) but I'd have to say that most of the famous Chicago hot dog places don't even do all of the ingredients. Gene and Jude's I believe only has relish, onions, peppers and mustard, Superdawg has relish, onions, mustard, pickled tomato, pickle but no celery salt, and I think Demon Dogs had the same. Murphy's has, as mentioned above, every ingredient necessary to construct the salad on a bun, and you can get it charred, or foot long, or charred foot long. the shakes are great too, as are the fries.

The best hot dogs I ever had were always at the Glencoe Golf Club. You would order them off the 8th green and pick them up when you finished number 9. It was a husband and wife who ran the kitchen and the food there was awesome. Even had homemade soups. One time they ran out of crackers for the chicken noodle and gave me a perfectly toasted and buttered bagel instead.

Then Glencoe decided they needed to bring in a company (like Aramark or something) to run the kitchen and it was never the same. Don't think I actually played golf there again after realizing those hot dogs were no more.
