The city expects to collect more than $50 million in fines this year from red-light violations caught on camera. The number of cameras being installed to bust drivers is growing, with 104 functional cameras already at intersections throughout the city and plans to install 25 more by the end of the year. Contrary to published reports [PDF] that show intersection surveillance may actually increase crashes and injuries, the city is claiming that accidents have decreased by 30 percent in intersections with cameras, and that the number of drivers who are actually running red lights is down by 60 percent. City numbers also show that pedestrian injuries, often resulting from drivers making illegal right turns on red, have declined as well.
For information on which intersections are camera-enforced, view a google map here, or a listing of intersections here. [S-T]

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

Last weekend I noticed a new camera aimed at drivers who run the left turn signal from northbound Clark on to westbound Ridge. I also noticed a camera at Clyborn, Damen & Diversey. Watch out everyone!
Of course, does anyone believe this about safety? $50 Million from these cameras? I expect a lot more than 25 of them soon.....
It's so awesome how all this revenue is going toward the CTA ... oh wait, nevermind.
yes but there'll be $50 mil more in revenue so they wont need to raise prices or taxes and....wait...bottled water tax what?
I red in Monday's RedEye about a local website that gives advice on both parking tickets and red light violations. It's called The Expired Meter ( www.theexpiredmeter.com ).
It has some decent advice/strategies on avoiding red light tickets and an advice column on fighting parking tickets.
Yep... the dynamic flashy duo just went up at the corner of Western & Lawrence right near us.
I do find it interesting that of all the intersections these have been installed on... not ONE I've seen is next to a school. There are plenty of schools on big, fast streets... you won't see them there.
Not causing accidents? I'm doubtful... and the city knows this as well.
