We cursed when we realized that we'd hit Hot Doug's just one day after the infamous Anthony Bourdain made his own trip there (Ed.Note: We usually refer to him simply as "BOURDAIN" around here). Pictures of Tony in line (courtesy of Cinnamon Cooper, AKA "Cinnachick") as well as some wiener shots from our trip below.

Friday Afternoon Diversion: Earth With Rings

BOURDAIN at Hot Dougs...that's...almost too much for the mind to take.
The Uber-Garlic Sausage is DELICIOUS by the way. That dijonnaise is perfection.
Was Bourdain there for his TV show, or just out of a sense of sausage appreciation? I'd much rather have one episode of No Reservations here than 100 visits by Rachael Ray
UTV: They were shooting No Reservations.
Thanks, that's great news. Anyone know what other local places they're hitting for the shoot?
Or when that episode might air?
Terrific, Ms. Stolpman. Even though Hot Doug's has gotten so popular I still love the hell out of it.
I've still never been to Kuma's, which I hear is the Hot Doug's of burgers!
Hi, UTV - I found this link:
http://blogs.chicagoreader.com/food/2008/08/06/bourdain-shoots-chicago/
Tells a bit more about where he will be.
Dave - don't know when it will air, unfortunately.
The Meteorologist - ooo, I love burgers. I must check out Kuma's. Thank you for the tip, The Meteorologist!

Kumas = AWESOME
still haven't been to hot doug's ... but frankly, i wasn't all that impressed with kuma's.
(insert sad foghorn noise here.)
Has anyone here been to Big Jones in Andersonville yet?
They serve Tall-Grass beef burgers. It's joy in meat form.
Just what exactly is a "Food Pron" anyway?
(I can't decide if you meant Food Porn or Food Prom)
@ The: Kuma's is good but the music is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too loud and the food wreaks havoc on my digestive system. (I've never, ever complained about music being too loud at a restaurant before, but I actually asked the seating hostess if she could turn it down seeing as I couldn't hear the person SITTING ACROSS FROM ME. She told me, "I would *love* to have them turn it down seeing as I have to work all night, but I can guarantee you that I will be told to 'Shut the f*** up.'" She came back a few minutes later to tell me that the owner/manager indeed told her what she was expecting, with a few more choice words thrown in. Then she said, "Welcome to Kuma's!" I felt pretty bad for her. =/
@ mrdeltoid: "Pron" or "pr0n" is internet speak for "porn." n00b. ;)
Albanyparkour - Haven't been there but joy in meat form is always a draw.
MrDeltoid - It's a sort of play on a common typo for "porn" and I think that's how people spelled it to get it past e-mail filters.
I'm a fan of Kuma's. Their burgers are excellent, and I like their beer selection, the beer garden and of course the music.
The other burger places I like are Moody's, Tavish, Twisted Spoke, Top Notch, and Relax Lounge.
As far as Hot Doug's goes, if you are just going for a regular hot dog or Chicago hot dog, its not worth the wait. There are a good number of places in the city (Superdawg Drive In, Wolfy's, Huey's, etc.) that are just as good if not better for that. Hot Doug's though is the best for the specialty sausages they offer.
a_wu: Oh, right. (Tossing English degree in garbage bin is disgust.) Thanks Cabron:-))))))
still haven't gotten a chance to pop by hot dougs this summer unfortunately, but their sausages are the shit and Doug is a super cool dude. I've been told to try having a hot dog deep fried and grilled; sounds a little nuts but is probably delicious. the lines are just a little too crazy for me .
and Kuma's has got to be my favorite burger spot around, although you better be willing to wait at least an hour if you go at any reasonable time.
When I worked at a hot dog joint in high school we used to do the deep fry/grill treatment with Polish sausage -- add some mustard and grilled onions and you have all kinds of (very wrong) awesomeness.
You have to go to Hot Doug's on a Friday or Saturday to experience Duck Fries.
I've given up on Kuma's though, as much as I love the Slayer burger, et al, the wait is just too long for me.
I agree with you jerseyist. Kuma's is way too cramped and even though I usually enjoy the music there, they keep it too loud. Which probably means I'm too old. Then that makes me think maybe that's why they keep it so loud...
I used to go there all the time, and I was rarely let down. I have never had a better burger. I had just about all of them and the one thing that made them all shine was the pretzel bun, damn good.
Except the slayer which doesn't have a bun. Reminds me of the slinger at the diner grille. Only good.
Bourdain and Eric Ripert dined at L.2o on Thursday, and yes they were filming. They ate in the Tatami room, and Laurent prepared a special menu for them. Then Bourdain had such a great meal that he had made a reservation again for Saturday, and that night he was supposed to come with Mancow. Mancow showed, but not Bourdain.
Skip it.
It's good, but the wait is silly. I got text msgs to read from me GF.
BRB.
amen to the Slinger at the Diner Grill. Best meal that's available 24-hours a day in the city. If you're into that kind of thing.
