Bears "Where Receivers Go To Die"

2008_8_12.moose.jpgFormer Bear Muhsin Muhammad, now with the Carolina Panthers, said in an interview with Sports Illustrated that Chicago is "where receivers go to die." While that's the quote that's getting the most play today, we like the next part, too. From Peter King's column:

Speaking of Muhammad, he had this to say about the state of the Chicago quarterback situation: "In the time Brett Favre has started for the Packers -- what's it been, 16 years? -- I bet the Bears have had 16 different starting quarterbacks. You've got to find the right guy and stick with him.''

Sixteen is low, actually. The Bears have had an NFL-high 21 starting quarterbacks while their neighbors to the north have had one.

Muhammad tried to back-pedal a little on sports talk radio this morning, saying, "It was just a situation where I was looking at the receiving corps as a whole over the course of time, and you really haven't seen a lot of big-name receivers go to the Pro Bowl for Chicago. It wasn't at directed at any coach."

Moose is one to talk. Opposing teams usually found it OK to cover him with the head cheerleader. Even then, he could not get separation or dropped the ball.

He's right. Have the Bears ever had a top flight receiver? And Willie Gault doesn't count.

But my biggest complaint with Moose is his bad habit of turning his head before he finally catches the damn ball. Moose! Look the damn ball all the way in before you start thinking up field!

Who cares now, he's Carolina's problem.

Happyfunball,

Tom Waddle

Lance Alworth was the last decent white "first option" receiver.

Waddle was just a solid slot guy (see: Wes Welker, Brandon Stokely, Ed McCaffery) who didn't have another halfway decent receiver around him.
