Emil Jones Retiring?

2008_8_18.emiljones.jpgState Senate President Emil Jones is expected to announce his retirement today, even though his office hasn't confirmed that yet. He's 72, and has been a state legislator since 1973; he became senate president in 2003.

In many ways, Jones has kept up the traditions of old-school politicians. During his years in the General Assembly, he has steered state money to a few favored institutions, including some that employ his relatives. Some of his relatives also have gotten state jobs and his wife's government salary got a sizable boost after he became Senate president in 2003.

Jones also has played an important role in blocking ethics legislation in Illinois.

Who wouldn't want that kind of career epitaph? Jones's retirement certainly frees up his schedule, but it also really screws Governor Blagojevich, whose cheering section, upon Jones's exit, will contain zero people. [WBEZ, Trib, AP, S-T]

Good riddance to this corrupt ass

From CPR:

There is also talk about the timing of Jones’ announcement. It comes just eleven days before state election officials finalize the ballot for the fall election. That leaves the potential for party leaders to swap Jones off the ballot and replace him with a hand-picked candidate. That has fueled talk that Jones may make a move to have his son succeed him in office—a maneuver that has been a favorite of Illinois politicians.

Does anybody actually get elected to public office any more?

Just when you think you would never see a light at the end of the tunnel, something like this happens! Our state will be just a little bit better with his departure.

Watching him last week trying to defend the pay raises made me wonder how long that pudding head would last in Springfield. Hopefully he is but the first domino to fall due to retirement or indictment.

Hey! Sometimes dreams do come true!

Maybe the man is corrupt but you gave us are innuendos and empty charges. By the way, your grammar needs correcting....

...but it also really screws Governor Blagojevich, whose cheering section, upon Jones's exit, will contain zero people. ...

I challenge to find the error.

Maybe its about him jumping before the Federals push him?

I wonder if Fed/Ward Up's favorite candadite Rickey Hendon gonna attempt to take his place? Of

p.s I mean attempt but fail

Have you noticed that, despite the massive bungling, posturing, and unethical conduct by the Democrats in Springfield, our state's Republicans have been virtually SILENT.

Sure, there's the occasional unknown Republican on the news, but otherwise the silence of our incompetent, dimwitted Illinois GOP is deafening.

In fact, there has been a bunch of clowns or criminals running the Illinois GOP for the past ten years. And now we have a chance to change the balance of power in the state but nobody's stepping up.

To the state GOP: Do something. Say something. Have a plan. Get some votes. What a terrific opportunity you are blowing. And when you get a plan, tell those downstate Bible Belters to keep their religion to themselves.

And I write all this as a Republican. C'mon, one can dream.

Oh, and Ricky Hendon's like that guy who wants to fight everybody in the bar. But, to his dismay, everybody just ignores him.

Sure, there's the occasional unknown Republican on the news, but otherwise the silence of our incompetent, dimwitted Illinois GOP is deafening.

I have been wondering about that too Ward Up. A year ago I thought that perhaps they were laughing too hard to formulate a plan but now it is just plain spooky.

This would be a perfect time to start forming plans for the next election season. You have to figure that most peoples opinion of Blago is right down there with lil George. A solid candidate from the republican party would probably do well. I think Lisa M. is going to have a hard time if her old man doesn't start showing he at least has some leadership skill.

There are Republicans in Illinois? I thought they all went to jail?

Now when the democrats all get locked up perhaps we can elect some humans to run our government? Nah.

That has fueled talk that Jones may make a move to have his son succeed him in office—a maneuver that has been a favorite of Illinois politicians.

And if you oppose that, you are a racist. Hey, Toddlin' Todd used that bullshit line when he was corronated to Daddy's gig. I remember him comparing himself to Lisa Madigan. Who was, y'know, elected to a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OFFICE than the one her dad held.

God, just vote them all out for the the love of christ, vote them all out!

You're way too nice Mike Thoms:
Good fucking riddance to this pile of corrupt shit!

I'm as left-winger as they come, but if a republican candidate showed some spine, fought for smaller and better run government and actually go the legislature to work instead of bicker like preschoolers they would have my vote.

Judi Barr Topinka, all is forgiven for Alan Keyes! Come home baby, come home!

Has the CEO of ComEd stopped crying yet? Who is going to push through rate increases on poor people now?

don't worry WaterTower, James Clayborne' got you, Com Ed, People's, and Nicor faded
