Chicago Olympians: Day 11

2008_08_chioly.jpgWhile gymnastics has taken over for Michael Phelps in providing all the fireworks and dramatics this week, several Chicago-area athletes are providing drama of their own as part of several U.S. teams entering the medal round. It's "win or go home" time and while we'll be happy to welcome back our athletes with open arms, we hope they get to extend their stay in Beijing just a little longer to bring home some medals. Basketball, volleyball, softball, etc. It's time to bring home some more gold!

Men's Track & Field - David Neville ran another good race, finishing second in his semifinal 400m heat with a time of 44.91 seconds to easily qualify for tomorrow's final.

Women's Basketball - The U.S. squad cruised in their quarterfinals match by clobbering Korea, 104-60 thanks to a big game from Sylvia Fowles. Next up in the semis is the winner of the in progress Russia-Spain game.
Tamika Catchings - 6 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl
Syvlia Fowles - 26 pts, 14 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk
Candace Parker - 8 pts, 4 reb, 1 stl
Cappie Poindexter - 11 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl

Women's Indoor Volleyball - Team USA, with Ogonna Nnamani, outlasted Italy 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 15-6) in the quarterfinals and move on to the semis where they'll take on Cubs on Thursday.

Men's Indoor Volleyball - Just to update: Tom Hoff, Sean Rooney, and the rest of the U.S. Men's team dispatched Japan 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-21) to finish pool play undefeated. Next up is Serbia in the medal round.
