Gio's Café and Deli in Bridgeport holds a soft spot in our heart. Years after we moved to the neighborhood, Giovanni Liuzzo, Ignacio Bautista and their staff still make the best Italian food in Bridgeport. Gio's was the subject of our very first post here on Chicagoist. Since then we've introduced numerous friends to the place and its charms.
These days it's quite hard to get a seat, so we order takeout. Breaking from tradition this week we ordered the panino di avolo from their sandwich menu. This monstrous cold panino ($5.25) is stuffed with fontanella cheese, pepperoni and spicy capicollo. AS though the capicollo weren't enough, we added hot giardinera relish to the sandwich.
Gio's Café and Deli is located at 2724 S. Lowe, phone 312-225-6368.

sweet jesus that looks good
I'm paying for all that heat this morning, Mike.
do they really have giardinera relish?
mild or spicy
The name of the sandwich is a play on words in Italian leading to the spicy ingredients... diavolo means devil and most spicy dishes are fra diavolo (brother devil) or also we have arrabiata (angry) or puttanesca (er... look up the word "puttana" on your own).
Happy sandwich eating.
is the relish finely chopped? There is a local import/export company...I think it's call Pagliacci and they make/import olive oils, capers, giardinera etc...they have a giardinera relish that might be the greatest condiment ever created. I love spicy food but i have to hard time choking down a big chunk of cauliflower when i'm eating a combo. the relish is everything you love about giardinera, finally chopped, soaking in a dark, spicy olive oil, also in hot or mild. i don't even really know where to find the stuff, I think they have it at Potash Bros. and some smaller specialty grocery stores. if you ever see it, buy it.
mm. heart-cloggingly good!
gio's bread sux, otherwise, a brilliant sandwich.
