Showgirls Gone Wild

2008_8_21showgirls.jpg What more can we add to what's already been said about Showgirls, except that it meticulously catalogs every single reason why this country is so fucked up? John Waters has described it as "funny, stupid, dirty and filled with cinematic cliché; in other words, perfect … it will be great trash forever" while acclaimed filmmaker Jacques Rivette calls it "one of the great American films of the last few years ... Like every Verhoeven film, it's very unpleasant: it's about surviving in a world populated by assholes, and that's his philosophy."

Much like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it's best when viewed on a big screen with a rowdy audience. This Saturday you can experience the flick in all its ketchup-spewing, porpoise-sex, kick-down-the-stairs glory at the Music Box's gala screening. The show, hosted by Dick O'Day and featuring members of Hell in a Handbag, begins at 10:30 with a stripper pole/lap dance contest. And yes, there will be prizes. The $12 admission includes an "interactive guide." The evening will be a blast but alas, you won't be able to play the Showgirls drinking game.
