Payne Management

2008_8_25.payne.jpgWGN news anchor Allison Payne says she wasn't drunk during the broadcast on Thursday: She says her slurred speech was a result of the series of ministrokes she suffered earlier this year. Exhaustion and stress apparently exacerbate the effects of the ministrokes, and Payne says that last week "was extremely stressful." [Trib]

Allison has not looked well ever since she returned from her medical leave. To me, she often looks slumped-shouldered and her face is sometime puffy. This could be effect of medications, I suppose. Still, slurred speech is usually considered a major warning sign of a stroke. If she is slurring on the air, somebody should have taken some action to see that she got some medical attention.

Sad that she even has to apologize. That's like a person with cerebral palsy having to prove they are not somebody making fun of someone with cerebral palsy. Or drunk themselves.

Von Erich: I agree with you completely. Who would actually believe that she'd go to work drunk?

Yeesh! I thought it was just me. I've been uneasy watching Allison since her return and have noticed that something wasn't quite right with her delivery and overall demeanor. It seems like it takes painfully long for her to finish what she is saying...often slurred. Last night's broadcast from Denver was no exception.

I hope she is alright, I have been a fan of Allison Payne since I was a kid (in Michigan).

You guys are kidding right? Nicholas, Jones33, you know that she has had a series of strokes, right? She's trying to come back from them, but that's why her speech is slurred.

Yes Chicago D, i am aware of that. My point that I was getting at was that perhaps she wasn't "ready" to come back on-air just yet (ie, needed more recovery time).

Yes, Chicago D I am fully aware of her reported series of strokes. But, if she suddenly develops slurred speech on air, that could be a sign she is suffering yet another stroke. She does not look like she has recovered completely. If her speech is permanently slurred, perhaps she should retire from on-air work. Sadly.
