Man Charged with Stealing Expensive Puppy

Donald Kolakowski of Niles has been charged with theft after he took home a puppy from a Petland store that he said was his but wasn't. According to the police Kolakowski saw a sign on the puppy's cage that said "I'm going home soon" and convinced an employee he was there to pick the dog up. She didn't ask for a receipt, and he apparently left with the miniature pinscher, who actually cost $1,600. The dog has been returned to the store, and Kolakowski, currently on parole, was releaed on bond.[Trib, Pioneer Local.]

We're sure that dog is great, but there are tons of other terrific and adorable pooches to love that don't cost anywhere near as much money. Such as, left to right, Bubbles. Or UFO, which is a crazy name for a dog. Or Elden. Awwww.

My mom had a pug and was warned when she adopted him about "rampant pug-napping"

To the day she died, merely saying "Pug-nap" would reduce my mom to hysterical giggles.

Here we go again.

This is a good opportunity to implore people to stop shopping at pet stores that sell puppies. When there is a puppy in a pet store you can bet your bottom dollar it came from a puppy mill no matter what the store owner/manager says. At the very most, it came from some disreputable breeder. No breeder, no ETHICAL breeder would EVER sell their pups to a pet store. It just won't happen.

If you want to get a pet, get one for a reputable breeder or a shelter or breed rescue. There are just too many unwanted animals available. I'm probably preaching to the choir though...I'm sure that there are no Chicagoist readers who do things like purchase overpriced dogs at pet stores.

Couple of things I'd like to put an end to are puppy mills and FTGH (Free To Good Home) ads. It just needs to end.
