At Least It Isn't Bindi

steveirwin.gifWe enjoyed watching Steve Irwin's animal antics on "The Crocodile Hunter" as much as the next guy, but are Irwin's accomplishments worthy of having a school named after him, putting him amongst the ranks of Herbert Hoover, John Adams, and, um, Jean Baptiste Beaubien? One school in suburban Grayslake seems to think so.

Wanting to honor someone who's made an environmental impact, the Prairie Crossing Charter School has put together nominations of potential people whose name will be slapped up on the side of their recently built middle school building. Irwin made it to their short list along with Gaylord Nelson, Ansel Adams, and George Washington Carver. School director Myron Dagley is all for naming the building after someone famous:

"It helps the students identify with the building and, if for no other reason, it helps in public-relations work."

If it's headlines and attention you want, Mr. Dagley, how about calling it the Sarah Palin Middle School? [D-H]
