Red Bull Flugtag Goes Over the Edge This Saturday

Red Bull continues its world tour of wacky this weekend with a stop in Chicago. They'll be hosting Flugtag this Saturday at North Avenue Beach, in which willing participants will throw themselves over a 30-foot ledge in a homemade flying contraption, probably to bellyflop into Lake Michigan. If watching people get wet and wild as they plummet through the sky on an oversized parade float with wings sounds like a bizarre way to spend your Saturday, well, it is, and we can't wait! Here's a taste of what you're in for:

Gates open at 11 a.m., first flight is at 1 p.m.

Why would the do this in the fall? Why not a 90 degree day in August?

Here's a better question...why do this at all? Why hold the event? Why compete? And most importantly, why would you go to watch it? Why would anyone want to watch a bunch of caffeine-addled jags fall into a lake? And you know what, stop drinking Red Bull. If really need to be that wide-eyed and awake at least have the balls to do some fucking speed.

I went out of curiousity when they had it in 2005 or whenever and really the vehicles or __-crafts people made were pretty interesting. Someone made a gigantic set of Divinci wings which were really impressive but didn't really fly. The Bulls Head Pez Dispenser was also funny. But honestly, it goes on FAR too long, there are huge gaps between competitors. And when it was 90 degrees yes that's beneficial for those jumping into the lake but when you're watching from the grass... well... it's a bit much.

Wow, Mike Thomas. Did flugtag participants beat you up in 5th grade or what? Here's a novel idea, don't show up or read about it! Save the rant for something actually important. I'm out of town or else I would be there with a beer in hand watching.

I'm not going to go but the commercials are fun. maybe I'll catch some of this on YouTube.
