Tribune: Screw Google

As the fall-out from the United Airlines story continues, the Tribune Company says it's identified the culprit: Google. And its Googlebot.

The statement went on to say that Tribune Co. had identified problems with Google's search technology "months ago" and had asked Google not to "crawl" Tribune Co. news sites to include Tribune Co. stories on Google News.

Because as everyone knows, removing yourself from Google is the surest way to drive traffic. [Trib]

Sure, blame the other guy. Don't adapt or anything, that would be too difficult.

still stuck in the past, i see.

My Google searches have been freezing for about three weeks now.

What, the Tribune company has never heard of a robots.txt file?

It's not the lack of a robots.txt file, it's that the Trib & a lot of other newspapers have used software that automatically updates the date on the site at midnight, but they don't put the date into the article itself, right under the writer's name or an AP, Reuters or AFP byline.
I complained to them several years ago about that & they didn't seem to understand what the problem was.

Anyway, Google's a cult. "Don't be evil" indeed.
