When CTA Drivers Attack

We've all had our fair share of negative experiences on the CTA ranging from 30 minute waits to encountering unknown bodily fluids. But one Orland Park man's CTA bus ride takes the cake -- he's claiming that the driver of the bus threatened him with a 5 inch knife. Friday morning Brian Harroun was on his way to work on the South Side when he boarded the southbound Indiana/Hyde Park bus and immediately found out that someone had pissed in the driver's Wheaties:

When he tried to use his CTA card, it came back "invalid,'' Harroun said. He told the driver CTA personnel had told him in the past that if he encountered problems with the card, he should ask the driver to call a supervisor.

But the driver became irate, used an expletive and "told me to shut up and go to the back of the bus,'' Harroun said.

Once he reached his destination, he signaled to the driver to stop but she kept right on going. When Harroun approached the driver to ask what the dealio was, he says the driver pulled out a knife and "dared him to do something." Harroun managed to finally get off the Bus of Terror and had one hell of a story to tell his fellow construction workers over lunch at the roach coach. The driver currently has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter. [Southtown Star]

I love the subtle reveal that the crazy knife wielding driver is a she.

My smart card often is "invalid" on the bus, never on the train. Usually the driver will say to try again & if it still doesn't work, just waves me on.
The card is definitely valid, with more than enough money on it. It's obvious that the CTA is incapable of maintaining its equipment properly or the wretched, broken up Chicago streets are destroying the equipment.

So, the equipment on CTA sucks and the city wants to build a bigger ferris wheel.
Way to go. Let's put more shows on for tourists and Olympic bids and forget about the residents who need to get by every day.

In my world, that knife show is an assault charge.

I call bluff on this story. I mean a CTA employee actually doing work, speaking to a customer, and not being too lazy to do anything remotely close to helping out a customer (or harming one). NO WAY!

There was once a very drunk elderly woman at my bus stop that kept walking into the street, then sat down and passed out. I was really concerned for her well being as it was pretty late in the eve and didn't have a cell phone, so when I boarded the bus, I asked the driver to call her in, to which he responded wasn't his job. I stated that she was at a CTA bus stop, so why couldn't he use that little radio to call it in? Still nothing and he told me to sit down or get off. So, I finally convinced someone on the bus to call the cops for me to make sure she was ok. THATS more typical.
