Cubs Spanked By Brewers
As they draw closer to a second-straight NL Central title, the Cubs seemed to be on a roll, winning five in a row. Until last night, that is. The Brewers knocked around Jason Marquis en route to a 6-2 victory of the Cubs. Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder continued his monster series with a 3-for-4 performance, including a first inning, bases loaded double. Ramirez and Theriot both knocked in a run, but it was not nearly enough as the rest of the Cubs bats were quiet. Marquis gave up all six runs in five and a third innings. Meanwhile, after Brewers pitcher Ben Sheets left the game before the third inning, the Cubs faced seven more pitchers and couldn't figure any of them out. From the Tao of Lou: "They threw a lot of different pitching at us and got the job done. You can do that in September. In the summer, it's hard to do." The Cubs' magic number remains at four, though a win tonight to close out the series will cut that to two.
White Sox Drop Another To Yankees
Just like their north-side counterparts, the White Sox saw their bats go silent at the wrong time as they squandered a good start by rookie Clayton Richard and dropped their second game out of three to the Yankees, 5-1. Richard struck out five and threw six shutout innings before giving up two runs in the seventh. Scott Linebrink gave up three more runs in the eighth, including homers to Johnny Damon and A-Rod, as the Yanks closed the door. In spite of the loss, the Sox remain 2.5 games up on the Twins, who lost to the Indians again. After the game, Ozzie was unimpressed with the offense: "Offensively, we didn't have much going. To win, we are going to have score more than one run." The Sox magic number remains at nine, but by now, all eyes are turning towards next week's big three-game series in Minneapolis which, for all intents and purposes, should decide the AL Central.

Is 4 runs really a spanking? You used the same word yesterday to describe the Sox beating the Yankees but then last night the sox also lost by 4 runs. I'd say that at a minimum you need a 7 run lead to consider it a spanking. if you need a grand slam and a 3 run just to tie things up, you're being spanked.
Also, since the Twins lost the magic number didn't "remain at 9", it was "reduced to 9". Just nitpicking. good feature.
when the hell are the Cubs going to get rid of Marquis? He's obviously the weak link in the rotation and commands too much money to be mediocre ... while they're at it, dump Howry. These two, IMO should definitely be left off the playoff roster.

He's the fifth starter in a five-man rotation -- I can't think of any fifth starters that are better than mediocre.

Rest assured that they will be.
I used to feel that way about Marquis...when are they going to get rid of him? but he is a 5th starter and generally they're not great. I think he's actually pretty good among other 5th starters in baseball. he and howry won't make the playoff roster though, that's for damn sure.
Hate Marquis? How about MacDougal in return?
For a guy pocketing $4.75 million, you'd think he'd post better than a 4.39 ERA. That said, it's better than Zito's 5+ ERA, but Marquis pulls in more dough than Tim Lincecum (possible NL Cy Young winner this year), who makes a paltry $405,000.
It's not fair to compare veteran salaries to rookie salaries.
Lincecum started 24 games last year and threw over 140 innings - he's hardly a rook.
