Dining Room Décor: Tacos Erendira

Quite often the décor of a restaurant can be as important as the food and service of the staff in contributing to the overall quality of a visit. From the highest rated Zagat restaurants to Ricobene's and the late, lamented Demon Dogs, how a dining room is accentuated can be the difference between eating in and takeout.

A hidden gem in the wunnerful Bridgeport area is Tacos Erendira (3207 S. Halsted, 312-567-0202), home to one of the best al pastor tacos in the city. After relocating to this spacious new storefront from 35th and Halsted nearly three years ago, they had more than enough room to fill the dining area with antiques, curios and other notions to separate Erendira from other taquerias. We've included some photos from a recent visit, including some detailed shots of our favorite knick-knack: a bicycle hanging in the far corner of the room that looks like it can still go with the right rider.

Off topic, but I'm always shocked when people lament Demon Dogs. The dogs were so-so, the fries were greasy in a bad way, all that place had going for it was location. Bronkos, a few blocks west on Fullerton, was/is much better for that neighborhood.

But Bronko's never had a eating area that resembled a mini Hard Rock Café (some might say a shrine to the self-importance of Peter Schiavarelli), dino.

It's the interior design and accentuation of restaurants that we'll be the focus of these periodic posts.

Shakes. Demon Dogs shakes were incredible.

Mmmmm....burritos.

I used to eat at this place many moons ago when it was located on 35th & Emerald. I must say, it seems the new location is much easier on the eyes.

Thanks for reminding me about Erendira, Chuck! I'll have to swing by next time I'm in the neighborhood.

This is one of my wife's and my favorite places to eat around the neighborhood. It has great chicken tacos and the best salsa verda I've come across so far. The owner is the total American dream on top of it all. All the staff are very friendly too. I'm really glad this place is getting the props it deserves.
